Removing nail polish on symbols/FSF?
« on: June 18, 2012, 11:57:23 AM »
So, I just got back from the flea market with this haul:

All of them have red nail polish on them. Mostly on their hooves and legs, but a few have polish on their symbols. The Fashion Star Fillies also have polish on their faces and bodies. Is there any way to safely remove the polish without messing up symbols or the body paint on the FSFs? Also, how should I wash pony wear? Everything is pretty dirty. lol Thanks for looking and for any help offered!  :)

I have removed polish with polish remover ad it never damaged the pony for me...just dont scrub hard or with alot of remover...go soft and easy and it wipes off

I'd try non acetone polish remover on a bait quality pony before trying one something you want to keep.

Hot water can help against nail polish if you're concerned with the area around the symbols :) If it's just around the feet or something, then nail polish remover is fine, but keep it away from the pony's paint~

Congrats on your haul!

If it's the old cheapy kids nail polish they had back in the 80's it might come off with gentle scrubbing with a washcloth and hot water; I had a pony with the polish that came with the Perfume shop on it and it came off easily.

If not the cheap stuff I agree with the others with the non acetone being the way to go.

edit: Glacia, great minds think alike:)

I recently removed some red nail polish from a pony and it left red stains, but happily the stains are sun fading away fast!

Sunfading might be a good way to start...  I would try gentle wipes with NON-acetone nail polish remover but you may have to resign yourself to a few re-paints.  :)   Best of luck!

Thanks for the tips, everyone!

Glacia471, I will definitely try the hot water idea. :)

The nail polish can be peeled off once I use a little acetone on the edges to get it started, so I think it is from the 80's. And sadly, there are some stains. I will have to sun fade them, though. lol

Theres a chance it might be the variety of nail varnish that washes off with hot water. It was a big thing for girlies in the 80s/early 90s and was nearly always red. I had some :D

With FSF, it takes a lot of pressure to get their paint off (I stripped one once, it took AGES) so a light wipe should be good to go!

Edit: hey its Swiftwind! :D For washing pony wear, do a oxiclean soak but chuck a colourcatch sheet in in case any colours run. Those things are brilliant.

I just wash ponywear with a gentile detergent or even just soap. It is just fabric after all. Just be careful with any metallic fabrics and use cold water.

Okay, sweet. I was a tiny bit nervous that I'd wash the pony wear wrong and ruin it. I will hand wash them gently.

Yuitsu- Yes, I was so excited to find Swiftwind, but she's missing a wing and I scoured that stall for it. I also realized I'd taken the two FSFs and left their brushes. :( I hope the lady will be there next Monday so I can get them. They'll be complete then.

Yes hand wash the pony wear with a mild detergent - I wouldnt use anything as astringent as oxy for potential damage to the material as well as the decorative edges.

For the nail polish, I ll third all other suggestions - acetone, then a scrub and finally sun fading for the stains which may have soaked into the plastic

What a fantastic lot to find! Congrats

Looks like my Nightglider. It's likely pony hoof polish. Oh Hasbro why did you make this? Anywho, it leaves red stains in the pores of the plastic and is super hard to get off. I suggest you acetone off the hoofs (but not symbols or paint) and sunfade the stains out. This will take a loooong time, but if you don't like this great haul because they aren't perfect I will give you my address and you can send them to me :)

Here's how I fixed Nightglider so you can't tell her feet are red
