TE Bright Eyes and Oxiclean?
« on: June 07, 2012, 03:23:03 PM »
I've bought Bright Eyes as part of bait lot recently. Her main flaw is chewed off ear and some bite marks, but she also has cancer. Her body was also covered in purple dye. However, symbols were in a quite good condition... yes, were
Well, I decided to give her an Oxiclean bath. (I used Vanish Oxi-action, to be exact) I've bathed ponies the same way before. Nothing happened with other ponies in the same bowl. I knew that oxiclean damages twinkle eyes finish, so only body was soaked.
Sadly, I didn't take before pictures, but now her symbols look like this:

Red part of clocks simply washed away, on DS especially  :(
So, is that a common issue with Bright Eyes? Or did I do something wrong? Is there a way to prevent such damage?

I'm sorry that you had such bad luck. The only advice I have is never use oxyclean on a pony. Its not worth the risk imo. If anything, use cold water.

I have heard other people have had great success with it but I also would say no to oxyclean on ponies - even if it works 99 times out of 100, its that one time that you could ruin a pony. I am just a bit paranoid with anything too heavily chemically near ponies especially eyes and symbols - but thats a personal preference. I would think due to what oxyclean is actually designed to do the odds are reasonably good that occasionally "paint" may be removed from a pony.

I am so sorry that happened to you and Bright Eyes - maybe as the base of her symbol is there you can restore it?

Thank you Matcha for my gorgeous Baby Fifi avi

Well, I'm pretty new with G1s, and I had such great results with oxiclean before  At least, that's valuable lesson. I'll be triple, no, quadruple cautious from now on.

Yes, that's for sure! I'm restoring her ear anyway, and I have a bottle of paint with wery close red colour  :lookround:

I knew what Oxi-clean does t TE Gems but I've had to use it before because there is nothing else in this house that will get rid of all the deep grime some of the ponies I got have. I have a a Bright Eyes I need to restore soon but if she has deep grime then I really don't have a choice in what I use

Wow, I'm sorry that happened! I've never seen that and I'm kind of surprised.

Like hathorcat, I avoid oxyclean, though. Sd_dreamcrystal, what have you tried so far? I use toothpaste and a brush, I know others use a Magic Eraser, and some have said baking soda. There's also sunfading or peroxide/sunfading if there are stains.

But doesn't peroxide and sunfading work only for white or yellow ponies?

Regular sunfading works on a bunch of colors (I keep saying I'm going to post pictures of ones I've done, and I will get to that eventually)...peroxide, I'm not sure. I'm kind of afraid to use it like I am oxyclean.

The "purple dye" is actually a common thing on Bright Eyes, I've found. I've had several go through my hands and have found it on them. The one thing that seems to remove it without hurting the pony is acetone, but you can't use it over the symbols because it will remove the symbols. I think the "purple dye" might actually be plastecizer breakdown/leakage. And if it is, it might answer why the oxiclean bath affected her like that. It's just a guess, though.

Ditto what Bluerose said. Both of my Bright Eyes had the "purple dye." It came off with just magic eraser on my first Bright Eyes, but with the second, the magic eraser just wasn't doing the trick, and acetone was the only thing that really helped much. I still haven't finished her though...haven't worked up the courage to clean around the eyes, blush, and symbols of a sought-after pony with acetone yet... :P

Well, plasticizer breakdown really explains it. I've tried acetone and it works really well. Thank you!
But doesn't that mean that leaking will continue with time? Is there any way to stop it?

I've been able to use rubbing alcohol to remove some plasticizer leakage. The alcohol usually can be used over symbols and eyes too. But yeah, if that's what the problem was, then that might explain why the paint came off...from my limited experience with that problem, plasticizer can make the paint melt (which makes sense acrylic paint has a plastic binder). In which case, the Oxyclean may not have been the cause and could have come off with any cleaning...just speculating though. And yes, plasticizer keeps leaking until it's gone.

There isnt really any way to make it completely stop - its going to leak until its all done - I would suggest making sure the pony is reasonably exposed to the open air in order for the plasticiser to "evaporate" and wipe her down with a baby wipe or similar with regularity to prevent the build up!
