How do you rehair a FBR without ruining it?
« on: June 06, 2012, 12:35:16 AM »
As the title says, how do you rehair a FBR without the paint cracking and coming off around the hair holes.
Ive sealed it twice with testors dullcote, got the head off fine, used a needle to re open all holes before trying to rehair, and the paint is coming off everywhere!!!! ARGH!

I have the problem too. But I could minimize it.
I put a bit of a foam sheet around the needle to pad the rerooting tool. This works wonder. Also I try to do it slow and carefully.
Pre-opening the holes is good. Also careful heating the head will make the plastic and paint soft.

Good luck. :)

I just widen the hole first with my sculpting needle, then insert the hair. I may get a scratch or two but that is just due to my own carelessness.

I think if your paint is cracking.. You may need to look into a better quality.. Mine has never cracked, but my rehairing tool scratches it sometimes.

well there are various reasons why the paint you be cracking while rehairing. It could be the kind of paint you used, it could be the amount of hair used too. I always have some pant chipping around the plugs even with a rehair tool.. sometimes it's a hit and miss with it though

I had that happen to me the first time I tried to paint a FBR. Did you seal the pony? I use Mod Podge to seal my ponies, and I never have them crack. I also open up the hole using a thumb tack before I put the needle in. It helps quite a lot. :)

I've had it happen once and found that is was the type of paint I was using. I also noticed if I tried to apply to much hair into the hole, it got worse.

I agree with all of the above. Sometimes when I seal with Dullcote I brush a small amount of Modge Podge just over the holes for extra protection.
Also, squishy ponies tend to flake more than hard heads, I learned this the hard way :(

I've never had an issue with mine chipping at all, I use super cheap acrylic paints too. Maybe you're layering on too much paint?

I always make sure to poke out the holes with a safety pin first so the paint isnt plugging the holes.

I used to have major problems with cracking around the holes before I started thinning my paint with acrylic paint thinner as opposed to water. Water weakens the bonds between the paint molecules making it more likely to crack and peel. I still get a little bit of damage occasionally from my tool, but nothing a little touch up doesn't fix.
