The quality of plastic in Nirvana ponies.
« on: May 14, 2012, 01:38:26 AM »
I've been thinking about this issue ever since I got a look on some of the Nirvana ponies, the photos of which were posted on My Little Wiki.

My question is: what is the quality of plastic in the Nirvana ponies? I'm asking, because when looking at some of the photos (especially of the Venezuelan ponies) I noticed that the plastic differs from the one from which the US and European ponies were made: in some cases it reminded me of those fakie toys you could buy in the early nineties where the plastic is really rubbery and has that shine on them (I have a fakie baby pony which has a body of this type). I know that Brazilian ones were made from a softer plastic than their US counterparts, but I'm also wondering about the others.

Also, are the Nirvana ponies prone to such flaws as pony cancer or regrind?

it really all depends on the country.  Italian pink ponies tend to fade fast, for example, and ponies from Greece smell like vanilla(I have NO idea why)

the quality vary's so much from country to country! also even within a country group some ponies can always be lovely and others a bit grotty :( some do seem to suffer from cancer/regrind ~ mostly raindrop HOWEVER she is a hong kong made pony ;)

here are a few of my small observations

peru ponies ~ always smell like wax crayons and tend to be hard.

greek ponies ~ tend to be soft and smell of vanilla/babyu powder.

argie ponies ~ tend to be hard and a little rough and often prone to pindot.

colombian ~ waxy sticky feeling, can either be hard and tough or very soft.

south african ~ like a rock!! very hard and brittle plastic. they often had lines and rough patches in the plastic.

spain ~ hard and some are prone to discolouring. the neck glue on some goes a little funny and brown too :(

mexico ~ variable! some are hard and some are soft, they can be a little rough in parts. the heads sometimes don't quite fit and they can be a little wobbley.

italian ~ for the most part they are hard, the pinks often fade to peach or even white. they can discolour round the hoof tips and ears too. some have little rough patches or lines i nthe plastic or an odd lump under their belly!

i am sure there are more!

French pony plastic is excellent quality, but as lunar says, it does vary from country to country. Some used cheaper plastics than others (at least I presume that's why!). Generally you don't see them suffering from cancer or regrind, but they are prone to other flaws, like the Italian pink fading, scratches on French ponies and symbol bleed on Greeks.

El Greco probably used vanilla scent when making the plastic because all of its dolls, plush toys and ponies smell like that! I assume they did so to appeal even more on younger children - and it worked - there is a very positive feeling with these toys! (And I agree with everything PinkKittyWinks and Lady Guinevere wrote.)

I should add to PKWs list that Venezuelans are very, very soft but even the tiniest things can leave a scratch on them. Most of the ones I have seen and even the ones I own have lots of very tiny stray marks all throughout their bodies, even the ones that are NRFB. Also the plastic isn't entirely smooth on some parts such as seen here and throughout spots on her body.

I love Venezuelan hair, though. It's incredible. *A*

Also my Argie Baby Posey is very squishy and soft. You can squeeze her midsection and the two sides of her will touch on the inside as if she's a bathtub toy or something.

Apart from a lot of times Mexican ponies not bieng an exact match with body and head...

Yup, some plastic tends to be hard, coming to mind the Rainbow Mexicans, other is really soft (earth Twilight and the Princes), and other is a mix between soft and hard, some Cherries Jubilees are soft and others hard.

A notable thing is that the alternate Sundae Best (white body and purple hair) tend to be really gooey (that plastic leaking... *sad sigh*), when the normal Sundae Best thend to be in good condition.

YES!

i made a tiny cut in my venuzelan starshines tail hole by mistake when i was cleaning her  it also picks up colour very easily too so don't put her near anything painted or printed! my starshine now has a little mark under her hoof from being sat on a printed bit of paper on my desk.

the hair is divine though :)

I mentioned that in my Thread when I posted about the First Veny Tootsie, which I was lucky enough to have received.  The Mold seems to have left a lot of flaws on the body.

Here is a link to the Old Arena Article about  that pony.
