Cleaning Magic Message Ponies
« on: May 18, 2012, 07:20:15 PM »
Are there any special precautions to take while cleaning magic message G1s?  I looked in the "helpful tutorials" thread and searched here and online in general but couldn't find anything.

Thanks

Don't use hot water or oxyclean!

I once tried to clean a couple of magic message ponies who had mint, working symbols.  I did the usual hot water, oxyclean bath and watched in horror as their symbols slid off:(

Someone else can probably give you better hints but generally I would just be very gentle and careful, like washing a so soft.

Yes, clean them as you would any other pony but try and prevent ANYTHING from getting near the symbols as they are super sensitive and really are a layer of film on top of another layer which means they are more than a little delicate.

Yep I screwed this up yesterday. Cover up her symbols!  The plastic on mine got even more bubbly and horrible looking after hot water.     She looks like she has blisters.

Yeah, keep the heck away from the symbols!  Don't soak them in anything.  They are the easiest ponies to ruin by cleaning!

I clean all my ponies with acetone (haven't cleaned any MM ponies)and that will get them quite clean (on the outside, at least, lol).  Apply it to a cotton ball and wipe but then use a q-tip carefully around the symbols (and eyes, blush), getting as close as you feel comfortable but don't touch them.  And don't make the cotton ball or q-tip soaking wet - just damp, you don't want the acetone dripping on ANY paint.

Has anyone tried a magic eraser over the symbols yet? That might work if you're extra gentle. I generally clean ponies with magic erasers. They don't take off symbols, eyes or blush if don't press too hard.

Cant say I have tried a magic eraser but honestly I would worry about that taking off the top coating...when its a painted symbol thats one thing but because its a film I would be concerned...

I have tried magic erasers, and it is what took off half the symbol on my childhood mirror mirror.  Her symbol had already lost that outer coating, but I say just keep things away from the symbols to be sure.  Better safe than sorry.

I've cleaned the symbols gently with just soap or toothpaste and warm water, but they weren't working symbols. However, the top coating didn't come off and they didn't seem any worse than before.
Anyone have any experience with that on still good symbols?

I would definitely not use a magic eraser over a MMs symbol!  They are almost like plastic wrap in a way. I have taken blush right off with one too. I love them, but you have to be very careful.

When I clean MM ponies, I just clean them mostly with a rag and oxy clean, but I keep it off of the symbol. Then I use a q tip to clean near the symbol, and kind of rinse it with cool water, keeping it off of the symbol as much as possible.

No magic erasers! I looked at cleaning tutorials that have used them and tried it on BBE Gusty from my childhood.. now her symbols are even more gone than before

I would say cold water, gentle soap, and a soft brush (and stay away from the symbols)... I've not cleaned Magic Message ponies but from what I'm reading... yeah
