Fairytails customs, *sculpted* features?
« on: May 09, 2012, 01:23:44 PM »
has anyone customized fairytails, but with sculpted feathers instead of actual doll hair?

I'm contemplating it, but would love some inspiration for you people :)

While I have no Fairy Tail specific experience to contribute, I have done a fair bit of sculpting and can somewhat guess why it's not too popular - it'd be pretty hard to get them to stand up properly with any added weight.  Those foot clasps are notoriously weak, and apoxie/sculpt material tends to be heavy.  I suppose if you were going to permanently attach the bird to a stand or incorporate some other kind of reinforcement so it could remain upright it could work, though.

Might be a good use of a bird that already has broken/missing feet.

Thanks for the info !   The reason why I haven't attempted any sculpting on Fairy Tails is because I didn't have any material that was light enough that wouldn't tip the whole thing over.

Recently, I did find some sculpting stuff that dries in plain air, and is ultra light, so I thought that if I found some FTbirds with intact clip feet, it would be do-able, as long as they're on a perch. (Sadly enough, the material is also very delicate and breakable)

I really do consider FTbirds to be genuine cousins of MLP, even though Hasbro marketed them as separate :)   This toy line hasn't been given the attention it deserved, back in the 80s as well as now among customizers :(
I really want to try this..

Model Magic? That's about the only stuff I can think of that would be light enough.  Could work well if you give it a good support structure, maybe wire mesh.  Unfortunately yes it tends to be quite fragile with very thin areas.  There aren't really any light weight options that are also very strong that I know of.

I think Fairy Tails are great, have a small collection myself (and had quite a few as a child, almost all of the original twelve, and they always hung out with my MLP's.)

One of my model horse peeps used something super light to make wings, I need to get the name of it.  I think it would be a great thing to try.  I have a few baits around here someplace.
