cotton candy g1 oddity- originals vs retros
« on: April 29, 2012, 06:23:17 PM »
I noticed something odd today. I took a pic of it so ya'll could see it and maybe explain it to me.. ?
Its 3 cotton candys. 2 originals same year and made in hong kong and one retro cotton candy. All 3 of them are different!?  The retro one now freaks me out, but the cutie marks on the originals seem different- and maybe even the body molds too. Take a look:

what do you think? can someone explain this to me why are they all different. i though the retros were a reuse of the original moulds. ???

Hello!  I think I can help.  The retro molds were not original molds.  I remember there was a lot of discussion about what Hasbro used.  Someone here may know, but I suspect they did what we called in art class "in the manner of," meaning a close (but noticeably different) copy.

Regarding the differences between the originals--there were a number of "Collector's Pose" molds.  Hasbro corrected the bent-over, easily tipped-over Flat Foots with more upright Concave Foots, but they continued to tinker with the mold.  The changes are especially evident in Peachy and Lemon Drop.

Oh and remember G1s have "symbols" not "cutie marks" ha ha!  :)
Looking for CF Minty, excellent condition! (and maybe Snuzzle and Blue Belle)

I believe what you have here are the original "flat foot" Cotton Candy (on the left) and the "concave foot" one just to the right of her. The latter is in fact a different mold (with concave feet, obviously, as well as longer front legs to keep the pony from tipping over as easily), and differently colored than the original. She was available through mail order, whereas the flat footed one was the regular store release.

Yes as ValeofSpring has mentioned the retro version is a pretty poor interpretation of the FF originals...if not for the fact they were made of Hasbro I think I would have assumed they were fakies... :P

The Flat Foot and the Concave Foot ponies were both available in stores...the FF first and then there was a second release of the same set in stores but by this time HB had corrected the "tipping" forward tendency of the FF by lengthening the legs and even shaping the underside of the hooves i.e. Concave Foot [although the extra length in leg and raising of the head is what makes most of the difference in balance].

Is the one on the left certainly FF Cotton Candy - she looks a little too upright...although that could be perhaps her rear legs have pushed in over the years or of the photograph of course!

Either way...a great row of ponies there. Cotton Candy is a fab pony.

Just to add to relcelestia:  There is an additional CF Cotton Candy that I believe comes between FF and the store version in her post above.  I *think* it is the one on the left in your photo (I agree w/ hathorcat she looks too upright to be FF).  This is the light pink CF Cotton Candy, who has the same coloring as the FF.

I think the timeline would be something like this:

FF Cotton Candy - Light pink, first available when MLPs released early 1983
CF Cotton Candy #1 - Light pink, the "corrected"/upright pose, released sometime during 1983
CF Cotton Candy #2 - Medium pink, the re-release of Cotton Candy with the Year 2 ponies, Jan 1984
CF Cotton Candy #3 - Dark pink, MO, available c. 1986-1989

Here is a pic of CF #1:

1983 - FFs released at beginning of the year, at some point the post was corrected/made more upright and the ponies became CFs
Looking for CF Minty, excellent condition! (and maybe Snuzzle and Blue Belle)

It's funny how many varients there  are - I swear every time I come across a Lemon Drop each one looks different!
