The best light is natural light.  Try to go outside on a nice day.

Other then that, make sure the iso isnt too low or too high, depending on how much light there is, and you dont have to stick with the white or black background.  If you have a form for what you are selling (a bust or something to put your jewlery on), a pretty picture attracts more people.

*looks outside* I need to do this exact same thing when it gets a bit wamer, I feel a bit better and the BF is here.  He wants me to open an Etsy shop to sell  my own jewlery.

chrissy ~ you can get all sorts of fancy bulbs (dazzle bulbs will make any faceted stones glitter like mad) and such, but i agree that a 60w is what you need  :)

this website is useful!

i work for a company that sells precious and semi precious stones and jewellery and such :) we do all our own photography and the set up we use is that described on the above website.

you do need to play about though till you find what works for each item. each price of jewellery is different and you will need to adjust your photgraphic set up and such, so make sure you make notes ;)

thanks Eskara1862 and KiwiSquirtBottle - I've got some cheap lights, all I have to do now is find an extension lead.  I've been fiddling with the camera and trying to learn the settings and I'm going to find it's manual online to check further.

DoctorMowinckel - thanks so much, that link is really useful :)  it explains lot sof things I didn't understand :)

Erm, next time I see a nice day might be a bit late!  I do that for ponies as far as I can melodys_angel but I live in England so overcast is normal and it'll be raining for ages now :( I'm hoping the new lights will work ok.

thanks PKW, I've already found that link.  Doesn't entirely apply to my stuff which is mostly glass and plastic :p it was useful though.  Our of interest would you like to PM me your work's name, I might have bought supplies from them :)

Off to read camera manual and find a lead then experiment with the lights :)

pm for you chrissy :)

glass and plastic do react slightly differently you are right :) though any faceted stone be it glass or diamond will reflect in a similar way ;)
