Oh no massive disaster, help!
« on: April 19, 2012, 05:17:43 AM »
So I'm really stressed now. I was on the final straight with my custom for the spring/easter swap. All finished only re-hairing to be done. So I thought I'd play clever buggers and use triple thick plugs for extra luscious-ness. Well this its the first g1 I've used and I have split her skull open through about 5 plugs. I'm totally devastated and don't have time to start from scratch. I can't post pics for obvious reasons but does anyone have any advice for me? Can she be saved? Am really really upset!  :cry:

I had a similar issue when working with a restore whose hairline was completely split when I received her.  I superglued the area back together.  I then took a pin and gently opened up new holes.  I then would rehair about five plugs at a time (use thinner plugs too) and use a ton of glue/mod podge to seal from the inside.

I tried several other methods that didn't work.  I tried to use Apoxie to repair the head, but that just broke apart with the force of rehairing.  Good luck!  :)

ETA:  I use a modeler's super glue that is also a gap filler.  I applied it liberally and it virtually fills in the areas that are ruined, becoming the new scalp.  Does that make sense?  I don't know that regular old super glue would work in the same way.  Also try not to get it on the good part of the scalp that will be visible after rehairing as it will discolor it (turns it whiteish).

I have done the same thing as cookhuman. I can't remember the brand of the glue that I used, but I got it in the modelling section. It came in a blue and orange metal tube and the glue was thick and white.

note when rehairing: you can always add more hair to a hair plug by doing 1 plug, then another in the same spot, etc...but don't try to add a super thick plug of hair all at once

You can also add another row of plugs between the first two rows I believe, just be careful when doing that too ^^;

What's the brand you've used?  I've never heard of that type of glue before.  It would be good to know for future reference!

There isn't really a "brand" although it is made by BSI.  It is sold by every hobby shop (the kinds of places for modelers/model train builders, etc NOT Michael's) and they just put their store stickers on the glue bottle.  They come in different color bottles based on the glue dry time.  I use 5-15 second glue in a purple bottle.  It is used as a gap filler so that when building models you can just use it to attach pieces and then sand it smooth with no seams.  I will try to get a pic up later.

ETA:  I just found it for sale on Amazon.  The 1/2 oz. bottle lasts forever.  It will get thick over time, so it is better to buy smaller bottles.

Thank you for the tip, CH!  :heart:  I've had that happen before and... well.  My solution didn't really solve anything at all.  Great advice!

No prob, V! :)

I do want to add that I use this glue for everything, from glueing in Swatches to glueing on heads (if I have to cut the plug).  It has a longer dry time than the super glue that you get in the hardward store and can be wiped off if you get it on your hand or whatever without injury or damage...you just have to do it quick.
