Airbrushing gradiants?
« on: April 19, 2012, 01:20:22 PM »
So, I finished my first pony with two different colors and I'm actually pretty impressed on how it turned out. But what I want to know now is how you do more then just the two colors?
To make more sense let's say I'm going to airbrush the base purple, then blend it down to pink and finish at the bottom of the legs with blue. How do I go about doing it? Do I airbrush it the way I just said? Or would I take the bottom color and airbrush that first and work my way out to the base color?
I hope this makes sense, it does in my head.. but I never know when it comes to thoughts in there lol

Ok thanks! That's what I thought originally but sometimes you learn new tricks as you go that make things easier so I thought I would ask if that were the case :)

I'm kinda picky with my gradients, I tend to start with the hoof color and then work up.  I let all that set and then come back and go the opposite direction to cover any stray splattering.

I guess it depends on colors, as well. For example if your lightest point is white you might not want to have to spray that over a darker color, because depending on your paint that might be difficult to cover, so which colors you're using can affect the order as well.

I do it both ways too. Sometimes I start at the bottom and other times I don't ^.^ Usually it depends on the effect, the colours I'm using and the bait itself - I have been known to decide the colours would work a better way, though this usually happens after I've got a few layers of colour in place :)

I think everyone does it their own way really. I use four and five colors some times. I usually have one overall base color then build up over that so it all blends nicely. All I can say is TAKE YOUR TIME. Don't get impatient or it may lead to drips or splatters.

With the pony your doing I would paint the base, fill the gradient down the leg then go back over the hooves and finish it off.

Airbrushing is definately a test of patience. Especially when you have a coat that won't dry. At that point I start wandering around aimlessly trying to find something else to do while I wait otherwise I am too tempted to go back and airbrush is before its done drying.
Now I need to get an idea to airbrush another pony!
