Arg! My little pirate needs help.
« on: April 15, 2012, 10:50:20 AM »
Hello, hope everyone is having a wonderful day. I recently pulled out a few of my packed customs to finish off some little details. I was missing what I wanted to coat the eyes and finally got it. All the WIP ponies were just fine except for this girl.

She is my little unnamed pirate. After I get her cleaned up a bit I'll get some better pics of her. My hubby made me the eye patch for her, he surprised me with it when I was almost done with her. It's made from real leather and artificial sinew.

The sinew has left nice little marks across her head and face. I was wondering if anyone knew of a way to keep the sinew from doing this. Would coating the sinew with a layer of Modge Podge work, or is it a lost cause and should I just glue it all to her head. I was really hoping to keep the eye patch as a removable accessory though.

Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks y'all!

maybe putting a little layer of non-glossy modpodge on the pony's head where the strap will lay? that way it wont get stiff if you were to put the modpodge on the strap itself?

Looks like the sinew was dyed.. Maybe if you change it to thread instead? If the dye is super strong, it could just bleed through the sealer.. Maybe try washing some of the color out of it? Or boiling it in some vinegar water? But if you get the sinew wet, I would let it dry on another ponies head so it doesnt shrink..

These are all just educated guesses.. I haven't worked with the stuff before.

Call me weird, but on a pirate pony marks like that just add character :P  She is great!

As said above, it depends on what's causing the marks.  If it's just rub-off then modge podge could help, it its dye it probably won't.  Does acetone affect the marks?

I think it's dyed. I just tried hitting it with acetone and no effect. Thankfully the sinew is thick enough to hide the marks.

Color: glad to know that not everyone sees that as a fail.  :frolic:
I didn't really wash her that well to keep some of the dirt that was one her. Character is a big thing. Thanks hun. I tend to see a disaster when something doesn't work the way I wanted instead of seeing the unplanned good side.

Now just to do a quick semi-style to her hair and then get my daughter to help with pics and I'll have some updates.
