HELP! Triple Thick Cataracts (Resolved, I Think. WHEW!)
« on: April 22, 2012, 04:59:02 PM »
HELP! Last weekend I used Triple Thick to glaze a pony's eyes for the first time. There were some indentations so today I applied another coat to try and smooth them out, which worked great at first, but now much of her eyes have become cloudy. Is it going to go away when it dries fully or is she stuck like that forever?  :cloud:

I'm wondering if trying to finish drying her eyes with a hair dryer or if that will just make it worse. She's a birthday gift that I was supposed to be giving tomorrow... *sigh*

Try and let it air dry. I wouldn't wanna chance making it worse. It sometimes can get gummy or crack. With any luck it will clear up. If not...umm....say its supposed to be like that?

By any chance did you seal the pony in anything AFTER you used the triple thick the first time? Maybe it got on the eyes and that mixed in with it the second time?

:( Sounds like a sad time. I havent used triple thick much, but it's really secure.. I'm willing to bet that it wont go away.

If it were me, I would peel the triple thick off, repaint the eyes, and reseal them if it looked really bad.

Try showing it to someone who isn't aware of the flaw, and ask them if they can pick out any flaws in the eyes. DOn't tell them what to look for. Someone with an untrained eye may not notice it if it isn't too bad.

AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH! It spread!!! The eye that just had one spot that was cloudy an hour ago is now almost completely cloudy!!!!

But... the side that used to be worse just MIGHT be a tiny bit less cloudy. So maybe there is hope after all. I was just about to grab a donor head and copy the original as much as I could in one night, but maybe it won't be necessary...

Nope, I didn't use anything else that might have mixed with it. The only thing I can think of is that I was too liberal with my second coat.

The pony was going to be a complete surprise to the girl and I don't usually give her anything for her birthday, so if I can't fix or remake the head in time I just won't give it to her. She won't be disappointed because she isn't expecting anything.  But I really do want to give it to her because she has been so interested in my ponies and customizing.

You can always just give it to her a few days late and explain that there was a technical error. Just give her a card instead that says there is a gift on the way. Then you have time to make the pony the way you would prefer.

I agree with Maniah. I've not had this problem with TT but maybe you didn't let the first coat dry/cure enough? I recall something happened to one of the ponies I was working on and I didn't let the first coat fully cure/dry... I don't recall what happened though orz

Maybe I am misunderstanding just how "cloudy" the eye is, but EVERY time I apply Triple Thick it is cloudy.  The TT itself is a cloudy product.  It will dry completely clear though as long as there are no other issue (i.e., paint not dry completely or something).  I usually let TT set for at least 24 hours though, because it does take a long time to dry if applied liberally (and especially if applying second coats).  Good luck! :)
