Glitter symbol touch up
« on: April 29, 2012, 07:11:41 AM »
Hi all, sorry if this was already covered somewhere, but I couldn't find it.  I have a nice g1 moondancer, she's in good condition, hair is nice and silky, but her glittery symbol is mostly gone.  I want to restore her as best I can, any tips on what to use when repainting glittery symbol?  Thanks in advance!

There is two ways I know of, only one of which I used. I've used a certain bran of glitter gel pins to retouch up symbols, but you need to at least use a spray on sealer on it as a liquid sealer would smudge it

The other way I think is to mix ultra fine glitter in with something like modge pog and paint it on.

Thanks!  I got her as part of a "bait" lot, and she's near perfect other than her symbol, so I don't want to bait her, just restore.  :)

No problem. As far as the kinds of pens, it depends. I've used these http://www.sakuraofamerica.com/Pen-Glitter-Gel but there are various others you can look into :)

Good luck ^^

I like to re-paint the symbol with metallic paint, then paint mod podge over it and dump glitter on it :) I seal it with mod podge again afterwards, but if the pony is going to be display only, you can probably get away without doing this, especially since it dulls the sparkle of the glitter

Micheal's sells ultra fine glitter that is a perfect match for what the ponies had:) Their Martha Stewart stuff comes in a million colors but it is expensive. Hubby just bought me a huge set of it they had but I haven't had a chance to test it out yet. I really don't like modge podge so i'm going to try and test out something else today and see how it goes;) I have a couple ponies that would be near perfect if it wasn't for some glitter loss!

This is almost what I do but not quite. ;)

I use airbrush glitter.  It's super fine.  I think it might even be finer than the martha stewart stuff.  The stuff I have I bought at a hobby store a long time ago, but when I was at the beauty supply store the other day, the glitter they have there looked pretty fine as well.  I'm going to have to take my stuff (which is a pretty close match to hasbro glitter texture as far as I can tell) and compare it to the stuff that they had there.  Anyway, if you look really closely at intact glitter symbols, they actually have a tiny, tiny bit of silver glitter mixed in, so I mix in a tiny bit of silver to all of the colors when doing a restoration.  I paint the symbol on with testors acryl gloss sealer, sprinkle the glitter over that, knock off the excess and gently smooth it out if it looks a little bumpy, let it dry, and then seal over it again with the gloss sealer.

I got that same glitter set! I was really impressed with how close of a match some of those colors are. I got the scrap booking glue pen that sells with all that Martha Stewart stuff too. Its a ball point pen, so it makes applying the glue seriously as easy as tracing the symbol. That glue is special too, in the way that if you apply the glitter when the glue is wet, its permanent. I used it to re-glitter my medley that i'm working on restoring. Once that glue dries, its on there for good, I had to use acetone to get it off...
it seriously works great.
