Full body paint on monster high..advice needed please
« on: February 12, 2012, 09:14:10 AM »
Hey guys, got a commissioner that wants a full body repaint on a doll she wants done..Thankfully it's black, but none the less I'm concerned about making it as durable as possible even though it's just going to be a collection doll. Can anyone tell me about their learning experiences with repaints on dolls with this type of plastic? I'd appreciate any reccomendations you might have :D

Since she wants the doll to be black I'd just dye her with black rit :)

I know the head will take dye, but does the body actually take it? I thought it was a little too hard to absorb the color?

I see no problem with that, usually everything that gets in contact with rit takes it when I dye ponies, even my lavatory... I'd say go for it and try it. If it won't take the dye too well and it won't take dark enough you can still paint it :)

well the biggest issues will be around the joints - I don't think you'll be able to avoid some chips and wear there. I have doubts that the dye would take well on the body, but even if it jut darkens it a bit that will help to disguise any places where the paint will eventually wear.

Yeah, you could dye it and then paint it, so that anywhere the paint wears off will still at least sort of blend in!

I can actually tell you from personal experience that the bodies do NOT take rit dye. The joints do, but the hard plastic bodies just mostly stay the same color. I tried dying a Draculaura purple over Christmas? Her joints were clearly purple, except where the hard plastic had covered them and she ended up looking streaky until I washed her, when she was the same pink as any other one.
So, I wouldn't bother with the dying at all- it just doesn't take for them.

Well, if the joooiiints take the dye, you can use the dye for that, then paint the rest, since the joints are really all that ever chips when you paint them.

You could, just be sure to turn the arms and dye them again- really she had such a sharp contrast from what was and wasn't exposed.
