Curious Baby Glory
« on: February 12, 2023, 09:25:28 AM »
I purchased a Baby Moondancer from a seller on eBay. By accident, they sent me this Baby Glory instead (I’ll be getting the Moondancer to restore later this week). :heart:

I was very confused as to why her tail was pink; I think she may be a factory error! Never seen one like this before, what do you guys think? I have a theory she may have been given Moondancer’s tail instead, ironically enough. I opened her up to make sure she wasn’t tampered with previously and she hadn’t been, so I’m pretty convinced it’s a true error unless the purple tails can somehow fade to pink. She also had an extra metal clamp inside, adding to how odd this all was. Curious to hear your thoughts!  :what:

its cute! Though I feel like someone switched the tail at one point. I don't think purple fades to pink like thta, but I could be wrong?

Could she be like those end of run Princess ponies where they put random hair colours and jewels together and sold them in bags?

@Sweetstuff, very unlikely. Princess Ponies and Windy Wing/Summer Wing pony parts also pop up in this release, plus some weird flutters, but not baby ponies. The parts from those mishmashes also tend to be made in China, whereas Baby Glory is made in HK. And, in the cases of those, more than just a tail is switched. They're usually composites of multiple ponies, or missing pieces (for example, I have a Buzzer with  a mismatched tail, but she also has someone else's wings and yet someone else's wing stopper.).

Side note - the mishmash Princess etcs were also sold in boxes - old Princess boxes and windy wing boxes, often. The releases sold in bags were end of line mail orders and other stuff but were not usually mishmashed.

Also, the above were all found in the UK.

I don't know what the truth of the baby Glory is. There's a good chance it was switched by someone else at an earlier date, and just done very neatly. The issue is that, now the pony has been dismantled, we can't prove for sure that she wasn't switched previously.

I would think her tail was just switched out. Maybe she was missing her tail and this is a donor. You can absolutely pull a tail through with the original hardware still attached.

I’m leaning towards a swap up at some point while she was owned by someone else. It was just done so neatly that I was sincerely unsure as to if it was done originally or somewhere else down the line, which is why I asked for additional input from the community. I’m quite new to the hobby, so I’m still learning things each time I restore. I appreciate the responses and discussion either way  :blush:

we were all new at some point and still learning! At least I'm always learning!
It's still a fun discussion!

Questions are never bad :) The answers are not always as exciting as we want them to be, mind you :)

As a rule of thumb, unless a pony is obviously in distress from mould or something else going on inside, I would personally advise against dismantling them. I know some people do this regularly for cleaning, but aside from potentially impacting pony value, it also makes it more difficult to discern whether a pony is original or amended.

I do what I can to avoid dismantling them, though most of the ponies I rescue are quite dirty, rattle, or need hair repair. Whenever I’ve tried to wash them without dismantling, usually water ends up inside the pony anyways. I always want to be sure everything is dry/rinsed out, thus I would typically end up needing to remove the head. All of these are strictly part of my personal collection and I’ve no intention to resell them, so I don’t think much in regards to resell value ^^;;

I agree with Taffeta, but I know it's hard to clean without being sure there's no water inside. I'd say have you tried using absorbent cloths like baby wipes or a sponge so you don't need to dismantle? Also pinch the root of the tail between finger and thumb to stop water going in while washing. Also leave somewhere warm and with good air circulation to dry as quickly as possible after cleaning, any water inside should wick along the tail and outside by capillary action, hopefully before the tail ring can start to rust.

I’m definitely of the mindset that I’d like to alter as little as possible when the situation allows, so I do agree with Taffeta as far as best practices is concerned. Whenever I do buy one that doesn’t need much work, I think wipes and at most some acetone on tough spots would suffice nicely. The ponies I usually end up purchasing require deep cleaning, we’re talkin’ pin mold/dirt, grime, odor, yellowing and overall things that require a decent soak or the very least hot water to soften the vinyl enough for a good scrub.
