Nervous about taking apart
« on: May 25, 2022, 10:32:04 AM »
I have a G1 pony (Peachy) and want to clean her from the inside out.  I am very nervous about taking her apart.   I have seen lots of info on how to take apart but not much on putting back together.   I just want to be sure of the method to do this.

It usually is pretty easy especially with G1's since they're usually pretty soft, usually you just push the head back in till it "snaps" back in. If the plastic is too hard put the head and body for a bit in hot water till the pony turns squishy, you should have no issues then. You could glue it back in but I've never done that myself (I don't plan too either) so I don't know what kind of glue could be usedfor that.

If you take out her tail (you probably should, it usually is the main issue why I take my ponies apart since they get rusty) you can get it back in with some thread. I think RetroGeek Crafts shows it well https://youtu.be/8I3Qv0JY_ik?t=638 (technically this one is a new tail but it does work the same with the original tail).

Thank you!  That puts me at ease about the process.
The tail is one of the issues.   The washer that hold it in place has come off and is rattling inside her.

Don't worry, ponies are pretty sturdy and putting them back together isn't nearly as difficult as taking their heads off! (That sounds awful, lol  )

I second SweetNightmare's advice!

If the head is still firmly glued on, I use an x-acto knife to carefully slice around the plug. Or actually I don't slice so much as gently press the blade down, trying to work in sections and bending the head back to see the spots that are still glued. Sometimes the glue cracks simply when you twist and bend the head. G1s are so much easier than other gens so you shouldn't have much trouble here! You can use a duller knife (like a butter knife or something) and/or a flathead screwdriver, too.

The easiest way to put the tail back in is to skip the washer and just push the metallic part keeping the tail together back in (sorry I can't remember if there's a term for this :'D ). Or you can use the thread method.

You'll be fine, I promise, and Peachy will too! Just let her dry a couple of days after her spa before putting everything back together. Good luck!

For putting the tails back in I like to use a pipe cleaner instead of thread. It’s a bit easier to grab onto for me. If you’re having a problem putting the head back on, soften the body with a hair dryer for a few seconds. A hair dryer works well on the tail hole too if the tail gets stuck.

I think I have been traumatized but I got it done.
It took a flat head screwdriver, boiling water,  and over an hour later (I took it slow and steady)

I tried to post a photo but it won't post.

It gets easier the more you do it! Slow and steady is definitely the way to go!
