Speaking of names--poor Gypsy! D: I've taken to calling her Tambourine; it might not be original, but at least it's not terrible. And someone should have told the naming team at Hasbro that Pillow Talk is a bad name for a pony...

I don't think kids would necessarily think those names mean anything bad or inappropriate but Floater maybe...

I didn't think anything was inappropriate about Pillow Talk as a kid, but I did think it was a stupid name. I remember a vague conversation with my mom about it, with her explaining something to the effect of it meaning when friends talk after lights out at a slumber party. Considering she comes as part of a slumber party set, this was a believable enough explanation to me, but as an adult looking back, I find it amusing that she felt the need to explain it to me out of the blue.

As for Gypsy, well, we didn't have her here in the states, but as a kid I only had positive associations with the word Gypsy; I loved the Fleetwood Mac song 'Gypsy' as a kid and to me the word brought up images of a beautiful dancing woman with long hair, beads, flowing clothes and a tambourine; colorful travelling wagons that were portrayed on TV. I suppose here in the states, only the glamorous parts of the culture are what translated over, at least to me. I can't speak for all American children of course, but the name would have seemed innocent enough. I'm not even sure when the cultural shift happened to where it became an unacceptable word; I know as recently as a decade ago my stepdaughter dressed as a gypsy for Halloween with social impunity, and my stepson has a friend who is actually named Gypsy...she is only 18 or 19...I imagine things might be rough going for her in the future.

I don't think the word Gypsy means anything bad in the UK but I may be wrong (getting old). The key point for me is that it's definitely a traditional name for a pony, and horses and ponies are often named after their breeders like maybe Arab, Percheron, Andalusian etc? So maybe that's why? I guess like anything it can be used as a bad word if that's the way someone says it. I used to get called 'Pear' and 'Chair' because they rhyme with Claire; both inoffensive words however... children can be mean!!! To me, the word Gypsy does represent a certain romantic stereotype so maybe that could be unhelpful sometimes.

This thread is making me feel very nostalgic about G1. I have always thought there is something slightly 'off' about the intention behind a lot of Hasbro toys for different reasons but I love them all the same.

I already answered, but Barnacle.  It's just such an unfortunate name. I think I'll call him Treasure chest or something. Anyone got name suggestions?

Captain?
Buccaneer?
Dubloon?
Coffer?
Hornswaggle?
Privateer?
Scallywag?
Seadog?

There are lots of fun pirate terms that would make for fun names.

Thanks for the suggestions!

Swinger, Player and Tap Dancer-such pretty girls, too bad their gimmick ruins them.

Soda Sippins-Darling ponies with stupid mouth placement. Makes no sense since Hasbro didn't mess up the Drink n Wets.

First up, Moon Jumper. I think she's really pretty and adorable, but for some reason, I don't like her symbol: A cow jumping over a moon. The moon is fine, but I don't like how the cow looks for some reason. If the cow looked different, she'd be perfect!

Second, Wave Jumper. Her hair color is fading pink, but I think she'd look perfect with silvery-white hair. Otherwise, she's really quite beautiful!

Third, Star Hopper. I love Sparkle Ponies! I don't really like Star Hopper's hair color, though. I think she'd be perfect if she had pale blue hair with silver tinsel.

Fourth, Mirror Mirror. I usually am not a fan of the color green, but ponies with green bodies and green hair, like Medley and Mirror Mirror, I find really beautiful! Mirror Mirror is quite lovely, but her symbol is a yellow and red mirror. My problem with that? Red is green's complementary color. They usually don't look well together. I would change it to a dark-ish blue or even a darker green.

Finally, Tabby. I love Tabby! However, I would change her hair to the brown color it is on her backcard. She's so beautiful on her backcard! If her hair was brown, she'd be one of my favorite ponies. (http://mylittlewiki.org/wiki/File:Tabbybc.jpg for the backcard image)

Sugar Sweet - The colours needed to be stronger. The pastel pink doesn't work with the green imo!

Put me down as someone who likes the Tootsie/Cherries Jubilee pose. I think it's quite endearing. A pose I do NOT like, however, is that of Powder and Skyflier. I have both of them displayed on my pony shelf and no matter how I pose them, they just don't look right!

I never owned Pillow Talk, but I think the name would have gone right over my head as a kid. Now, it is pretty funny (if a bit inappropriate!) that they got away with naming a pony that!

The name Whizzer also makes me giggle. I absolutely love her colors, but her name has always been a bit...questionable. I realize they're going for "whiz" as in "fast", but c'mon, it sounds like something else

The association that represents those groups in the UK is called the Gypsy and Travellers Association, I believe. Or something similar to that. I don't think that the word itself has ever had a negative connitation in the UK, except when people choose to use it as a slur - which is different from what it should and does represent. Renaming her seems to me to be reinforcing that the term is a slur, which is problematic if the community themselves use it to identify with. To me she's a clumsy attempt at diversity, 1980s style, and should be seen in that light. Thus Gypsy as a name is fine IMO.

The negative connitation seems to come from an outside assumption about the use of the term, but it is still a girl's name here in the UK as well. I don't know about other countries and their dictionaries but I know that in the UK the term gypsy also has a separate meaning as a person of free spirit, which fits the character of the pony in the comic as well.  Obviously that word has roots in that community, but has spread into the wider language. If it were a derogatory word on its own, that could not have happened.

Of course, everyone has the right to think what they choose, but words have power, and they should be allowed to keep their positive energy as much as possible.
