G1 Box Art Illustrator?
« on: April 07, 2018, 09:57:31 PM »
My roommate picked up the box of the 35th anniversary pony I bought and was trying to figure out who the illustrator was. Does anybody know or was it just some random person that wasn't publicly credited?

I am pretty sure it's based on artwork from the original G1 mail order release of this line? The art for these seems to be reworked from original material...

The G1 retro collector pony artwork is from a brochure where they were offered as mail orders.  :)  I'll see if I can find a pic of the pamphlet online.  I believe it was one of the ones that also advertised Satin 'n Lace, and maybe the Birthflower ponies.

Edit:  Found it.  :)  It's the pamphlet with a headshot of Satin 'n Lace in her wedding outfit on the front.  The inside advertises her, Lucky, and the Pretty Parlor (no pony included).

Oh thank you for the origianl source at least!!! We were just wondering what the artists current art might have looked like but it’s not suprising that they’re unable to be found RIP.

I believe most of the G1 era art was produced 'in house', so it'd be someone on the Hasbro payroll.  I've never seen any direct attributions for artists though, outside of the storybooks (and my memory may be failing there too, I know not all of them have a listed illustrator.)

This was actually our main theory, and that because they weren't an outsourced artist that they wouldn't feel the need to put the illustrator's name on the copyright section of the artwork (although I don't think they'd have to regardless given they owned the MLP copyright).

It's unfortunate but not surprising, thanks for all the replies!

I mean it makes sense - when you go to the store and buy a box of cereal, they don't put the graphic designer or artist's name on the box.  As much as we love all the glorious watercolour artwork that came out of the G1 era, to Hasbro it was product packaging / marketing material and nothing more.

Bonnie Zacherle is credited with the original designs of MLP  - she possibly is the artist but we may never know.

and One of the artists who was responsible for the SHS and some later playsets, her name is known and she came to the MLPFair  a few years back....

please someone who has had more coffee than I, please find the link with the pictures from her booth!  :(

Hasbro would of had in-house artists, and used freelance if they were over capacity... more likely when illustration for merchandise was in the highest demand.  (I assume, since that's fairly normal).

Commercial art generally doesn't have the artist name on the product... if commissioned then usually the rights are fully bought in perpetuity because the company owns the concept.

probably not, since that's not later. But I'll keep her name there since she started by working on packaging art. So semi-related.

Yes that is who I meant :)  Rose Bush (sounds like a pony herself!)

Yeah, Ruth Bush did art, box design, sculpting (of the Furbobs--maybe of the Bushwoolies too?), and I believe also pony design.  Whew, what a lot of work!

As far as this brochure goes, I am pretty sure Bonnie Zacherle did not work on it.  She left Hasbro just as the first year of MLP was hitting the shelves.  This brochure was released around Year 4;  Satin 'n Lace, whose wedding the Collector ponies are attending, is a So-Soft.  So Bonnie Zacherle would already have left Hasbro by then.
