PQOTD #5 12/21/16 Is there a cure for regrind?

Pony Question of the Day:

Is there a cure for regrind?

I have a couple ponies that have regrind (mostly Flutter ponies), and I was wondering if there was a way to cure them.

My Flutter's regrind almost looks identical to the one in the picture.

Sadly No.
Regrind is from the plastic breaking down.

I do know over time the reprint takes over and they seem to hold a solid color for awhile. My wings song has the same issue

Nope, it's a chemical process un-doing itself.  :(

That's what I thought.

How long does it take to become one solid color?

Are there different stages of regrind?

Are there different stages of regrind?

Not really... there aren't "steps" in the process. The plastics start to break apart on the molecular level - and depending on the environment that the pony is in, the process may slow down or speed up, but there's not a set formula of "1 square cm per 7 days" or anything like that.

okay, thank you. Is there a way to speed up the process of all the regrind becoming one color? The regrind on my Lily is really ugly.

I doubt you can speed it up.  Regrind is from when scrap vinyl is added to a batch and heated up and re-formed.  If the scrap vinyl isn't fully softened in the mixing process it will not mix properly and won't hold the dye as well as the rest of the vinyl in the mixture.  Since this pony is known to fade to a consistent color I wonder if it isn't the dye fading and not actually regrind, but I don't know.

You can paint over it.  It takes a lot of practice to get the colors just right but looks nice.  I find it difficult to paint around symbols without it looking funny, but it can be done.  Acrylic paints shouldn't bleed, but if you're worried about it you can mix it with Fabric Medium.  2/3 Fabric Medium with 1/3 paint.  It might look grey at first but will dry to the correct color.

Some customizers recently introduced me to Testors Dullcote for a sealer and it works great.  I haven't looked into the ingredients in it yet so I don't know how it may affect things down the line, but I don't know of any customizers who have had issues with it.

Yeah, but I don't really want to add paint to any of my ponies, I want to keep them as original as possible. But thanks for the tips.  ;)

It's a shame. Sometimes it at least goes all solid or makes a cool pattern.
