Fixing hair damage after an oxy bath?
« on: December 10, 2016, 11:03:49 AM »
My G1 Strawberry Surprise came to me absolutely disgusting inside. I did everything I could to clean her, but nothing really did the trick until I put her in an oxy bath, She's clean now, but her mane is totally matte and fried. I've conditioned it and washed it multiple times but nothing is helping. I'm assuming the oxy stripped the fibers and nothing can fix them now, but figured it couldn't hurt to ask here. I tried searching but the search function never works for me.

Is this poor pony destined to have a crappy mane forever now? I'll just curl it to try to make it interesting if so, bc I don't want to rehair a G1 that doesn't have a cut.

Thanks. :)

You could try to use ultra fabric softener, leave her hair in for a day. The next day don't wash it out, take a normal clothing iron or a hair straightener (in a very low temperature) and run it through her hair,  then brush it and repeat until you are happy with it. I don't know how effective this will be, but i'm sure it can't get worse!

I'll try that. :)

I'm not super concerned if she ends up with matte hair forever bc I know it'll curl (or I'm 90% sure it will.) I just wish it wasn't different from her tail. We'll see how it goes!

just be careful with the straightener because it can melt the hair, and only run it through little pieces of hair at a time.

I will. I've used heat like that on doll hair before so I know what you mean. :)

I always use fabric softener for pony hair. Since it is made of nylon and not hair, I find it pointless to use hair products. But anyway everyone decides what's best.
You can use it alone or in water and the trick is the time you leave the pony with it. But my advice is to rinse it in the end. It doesn't work forever.
My Buttons had very dirty and bad hair. Now she looks way better and the more I comb her the better she gets.

It's good you want to save the hair she has now.  I too have a lot of frustration with hair and picked up some fabric softener on Khayman81's advice but haven't tried it out yet...I also got some spray starch that was recommended to use before the straightener, which i will try on my problem hair ponies if the fabric softener doesn't do the trick...I'm not sure if the starch will turn out soft and silky or just stiff while looking silky...

Whatever you do, good luck and please let us know how it turns out!

Thanx lostpony ;-)
The thing we must always think of when browsing for remedies is "what is the material that makes this part?" And then we have the answer.

Speaking of matching materials,

I was thinking of stopping into one of the ghetto beauty stores around here and seeing if they have a good leave-in, comb-out conditioner for fake hair wigs.

You mean matte as in not shiny?  Hmmm, that's kind of weird, OxiClean doesn't usually cause that much damage unless the pony is left in it for a long time.

The only thing outside the box that hasn't been mentioned would be conditioner for synthetic wigs.  I have no experience with this but have been told it works well.  It's just not used by enough collectors for me to feel comfortable recommending it.

Twin Pines of Maine makes one:  http://www.twinpines.com/Conditioner

And before people go all "OMG their products are bad for ponies", it's only their products that aren't intended for dyed vinyl that should hurt ponies.  That said, I haven't tried this myself so this is all I know.  I keep thinking when I have a bunch of extra money I'll buy their products to test out.

Yes I was thinking something like that should be affordable in the beauty stores near me where they sell hair extensions both real and artificial.  **edited to clean up some insensitive wording I inadvertently used, my sincerest apologies to anyone who might have taken offense, and thanks to the member who kindly brought it to my attention**

Try the fabric softener first!  I got a big jug for $4.  Khayman81's reports that after use the hair gets better the more you comb it is the only circumstance I've heard anyone say that...I've got a pretty tough Sugarberry hair I'll try it on first.  Surely I'm not the only one who's noticed Sugarberry hair can be difficult?

The problem with "twin pines" is when Michael J. Fox drives Christopher Lloyd's DeLorean back in time and crashes into one of them, then when you get ehem, back to the future it's just called "lone pine"

I thought it was weird, too. I've put many ponies in oxy baths and this is the first time that this happened. I'll look into the wig conditioners. Thanks for the suggestion. :)

I actually just ordered a bunch of their products to test out (not removezit).  :)
