Glitter Star Combs: SHS VS Princess!

Ok this topic has come up a few times and I think I finally have a good photo showing the difference between the glitter picks sold with princesses VS sisters.

Beyond colors, the big difference is that princess combs have more glitter and the glitter is finer than on the SHS combs.

The magenta comb on the left is from a prom queen SHS and the princess comb is from Serena  (both are childhood collection)

Oh wow, that's so interesting! :O I wonder if every comb is like this? I mean, I would hope so, but I also wouldn't put it past Hasbro to repackage old combs with new ponies! Thank you for the information! I have neither set of combs, but I had the glittery SHS ponies as a kid, so at SOME point I owned some of these combs!

There's a few years between the last of the princess ponies and the SHS sets, so it doesn't seem too likely they'd keep parts around that long, but who knows.  Nothing's impossible.

Princess Sparkle in the UK also has a glittered princess pick, if I recall correctly, and some of the leftovers ended up on the comics as free gifts. So they kept these going for a long period of time.

I'd love to know if UK Sparkle or Comics freebies were the fine glitter or not since they were later releases like the SHS. I don't have any of those, so can't say much on them.

Taffeta, from photos UK Sparkles comb looks like a match with the white prom queen. When photo bucket decided to work, can you check the above to see if they are identical?

I don't have Sparkle MIB anymore so it would be an estimate based on my memory/the image clarity. I remember the comb being on the comic but I'm certain I can't tell which of the combs came with Sparkle and which with my comic. I am at home at the moment so if the images are working tomorrow I will look at my combs and see if I can tell later, but someone with a MIB Sparkle may be better placed to tell for sure...

Sparkle is a much later release (1992-3) compared with the SHS that had the glittery combs. We didn't have Prom Queens in the UK either (I guess they didn't culturally translate at the time) so the last SHS we had were the glittering ones, in boxes, and that was around 1990-1. I'm not certain of the US release date for that set but think we may have had the glittering ones around the same time the US had the Prom Queens so that might be a comparison you want to look at too...

As for the keeping parts around over time, the weird princesses over here also had this type of comb. I have one which I think may match Dawn (Dawn wasn't sold properly in the UK) which came with one of the Amber/Starburst variants and those were sold at the end of the line, so later even than Sparkle. They were generally bundled leftovers so clearly they had a lot of those combs.

To make it worse with the original princesses, we don't have consistent comb releases with those. We had the original set over 2 years and Hasbro made it up a bit with wands and combs here during that time. Also hats but that's another matter. (By the way, have you done any comparison with glitter density on wands vs combs with the princesses?)

Edit to add: Sorry for the slow reply. I got the combs out this morning and looked. I think your hypothesis is correct though it would need to be confirmed by someone with a MIB one.  In my glitter comb bag I have two which are the same shade of pink, which I would assume to be Sparkle's and the comic one, and they have larger glitter like your SHS examples. I have one other which is a similar but slightly different shade with the same glitter distribution, though I am unsure whose it is. And a paler one which I think is my childhood one for Starflash.

So the larger glitter was used for Sparkle's comb too. Probably.
