Why hasn't there been another "pony project" ?
« on: August 05, 2016, 06:39:31 AM »
With the pop culture popularity of the g4 line and retro appeal of the original g1 I'm surprised we haven't seen another pony project. Anyone know why we only got the one? Would you attend if there was a new one? Thoughts?

For clarity, I'm referring to the big G3 vinyls that modern female artists were invited to customize and then show/sell at a art exhibition in NY NY.

I'm not sure when the last one was or what prompted it, but at least one factor I'd have to guess is that bronies wouldn't care about it. As a whole they don't seem to go for things like "art ponies", they want show accurate or personal character stuff. Since Hasbro has been hardcore catering to the bronies I doubt they see something like that as being worthwhile. Hasbro doesn't even make art ponies anymore, at all. The SDCC/Fair "exclusives" are cut-and-dry stuff straight from the show.

Of course there must be many factors that go into why but I'd be surprised if this wasn't as least part of it, based on how they've been marketing G4.

I'd love to see a new Pony Project, new art ponies, collaborations with designers, all that stuff. Especially now that we finally have a decent sized canvas to work with for G4s, the Zillas. Customizers do amazing things with them already so I bet it would be stunning what other types of artists could do with a similar base. Or a G1 base, of course that would be even better! A bigger canvas and a classic shape. Now that would be a dream come true.

I'd never be able to attend but I'd have lots of fun drooling over all the gorgeous ponies in photos.

I recall there being a thing done with blank Rainbow Dash plushies. There were artists and designers who gave the blank pony different looks and such and they were auctioned off for charity.

Forgive me if I'm talking about something completely different. This topic just reminded me of it. I think it happened a year or two ago, I can't completely remember.

Oh, here we go. Found the MLP Merch article about it: link!

I don't think bronies factor in one way or another.   I mean, it wasn't like the Pony Projects were aimed at MLP collectors either.  We may have enjoyed it, but it wasn't aimed at us.  (Actually I remember a lot of people complaining because they didn't like the "artsy" style of the Pony Project, they didn't look like "normal" customs, etc.)

It was an awesome, very unusual project . . . It had to have been the idea of someone who was really into art.  Could be as simple as the person who coordinated it being too busy or leaving Hasbro for another job.

I'd love it if they'd do another one someday, though.  It was a blast!

Maybe they just ran out of blanks to send artists?

I really liked some of the pony project ponies- they were really amazing!

Did anyone keep track of where they all ended up? Since the event I haven't seen them sell often  and suspect most are not with collectors.

The sold of a stack of them at some point which is how they ended up in collector hands. I do also wonder if it could be something as simple as that. Its an expensive thing to have to get more made if thats the case.

Although not running the event, Hasbro were obviously involved to a certain extent. I do wonder if Hasbro's current focus on G4 and that fandom has distracted them from other events which involve the brand (be it the Pony Project or the Fair). I dont know how their support (or lack of it) plays on the event though. Thats just a guess.

I wonder how Hasbro perceived the first pony project, was it purely marketing and did they think it was successful?
