Anyone Here Understand Chemistry?

This is pony related, I swear.  I need to ask a favor from someone who has a decent understanding of chemical terminology.  Any takers?

It depends on what exactly you want to know.
I spent five years learning Atmospheric Science on the university level.  I come out of it with the ultimate knowledge of the universe.  √10 * π ≈ 10.

Haha, you didn't need to validate that- I thought cool, a pony thread I want to read! I am interested to see where this goes. :D I'm no professional, but If it's about storage or care I could dig up and PM you some conservator articles I saved about caring for types of plastics.

Um.... in what context? Just saying "chemistry" is incredibly broad.... What is it you need to know???

I need help interpreting articles about PVC, plastic, and various chemicals. I'm going to pm links with my specific questions to those who said they might be able to help tonight when I get off of work.

I have more familiarity with biochem, but I did study a bit of organic chemistry way back when. Probably not enough to be helpful, but I do like reading scientific papers. ;)

I do caution you, though, that while the primary component of ponies' bodies is PVC, it is so laden with plasticizers, stabilizers, colorants, etc. that it's difficult to extrapolate the results of "pure" PVC studies onto MLP vinyl. (For example, you might feel comfortable pouring Drano down the PVC pipes under your sink, but I doubt you would think it's a good idea to do that to your poor ponies!) Without knowing exactly which of the literally hundreds of additives were used back in the 80s, it's really hard to say precisely what sort of chemical processes to expect.

You know, I'll leave a couple of these here since they pertain to PVC if they are of interest to you or anyone else. :)
Btw- unless we sent piles of ponies to a lab, we won't know the recipes used in our beloved 80's MLP (pure PVC is brittle, so most of the weight is plasticizers and stabilizers -but which ones exactly?). So generic go with caution storage and care applies.

Forget how I found this one. 6 pages, pdf. has a chart for types of plastics and deterioration.

LOL, I wouldn't get too excited.  If they're able to help me I'll post the info to my website.  I usually have a ton of information saved up before I get around to making an update, but I'm working part time now so maybe I'll be better able to stay on top of it.  I'll try to remember to post to this thread when I get it added, for anyone who's curious.

Ah, okay.... I haven't done chemistry in years, but I know some of the basics of H2O2. It's HIGHLY reactive; it will foam upon contact with most solids. That's why hydrogen peroxide is used in households to clean bad cuts, particularly a dirty scrape. Using alcohol to clean a wound with dirt or particles in it is a bad idea; it will push them down. Peroxide, therefore, is typically poured on the wound which rapidly reacts with the blood and tissue, creating a foam that pushes the contamination out of the wound, removing some actual flesh in the process... that's why it stings so terribly. After the wound is cleaned, it is rinsed with water to remove the peroxide and de-volatize it, then the wound is bandaged. Peroxide compounds are also used in other ways; bleaching hair, cleaning surfaces, it's a potent and caustic chemical. Proper dilution and handling keeps you safe. So in relation to ponies, yes, a little H2O2 will be effective if you're careful. I would suggest not using it on ponies with rich, intense colors, like the Rockin' Beats ponies. It will most likely leech the pigment chemicals out. But a little surface wiping with a paler pony, particularly a white pony, should help to remove plasticizer residue and surface grime. I imagine a little poured over an area with ground in dirt would alleviate that as well. But be sure to rinse HEAVILY after use, and don't wait. Like I said, peroxide is caustic. It'll break down the plastic compounds if you're not careful. That's about all I can help with.... I was in Geosciences, so my chemistry studies focused more on minerals and metals....

Love your site Far Dreamer, can't wait to see any new updates.

I don't know much about technical chemistry but I do work with plastics daily if you have any production process questions.
