Question about dying a pony
« on: June 02, 2016, 07:15:24 PM »
hello! i'm going to take on my first custom (sort of? i'm doing two at the same time). i noticed everyone says that in order to dye the pony you must remove any bit of glue or else the dye wont take to the areas that have the glue. i wanted my pony to have markings that weren't dyed. could i purposely put glue on those areas and allow it to dry before i dyed them to give them markings? it's a g1, and i'll be using the powder rit dye! the pony is white. thanks in advance!

I'm not sure anyone has ever tried it. It seems like it might work if your glue is not water soluble.

Yeah, I haven't seen anything like that before either, but I think Kaoskat is right -- if you had some sort of glue that wasn't water soluble, that you could remove afterward.... I almost wonder if silicone caulking might work well?  After it's dry, it's not water soluble, but you could peel it off without too much trouble.

It would be an interesting experiment for sure! I covered Seashell's eyes and symbols with acrylic paint and that stopped the dye getting into the eyes/symbols, but I don't know if that's because the original paint on the eyes/symbols made it so the dye couldn't get through from the inside.

Like, if you put glue on the outside where you want markings, is there a chance the dye will just seep through the plastic from the inside? If you have a bait, I'd definitely try experimenting!

The idea is intriguing, I hope you share the results with us if you end up experimenting with it!

wow i ended up forgetting to check for responses here! well, i did try the glue: however, i very foolishly tried it with water-soluble glue, hehe. even with that, there was definitely a colour difference! i didn't end up getting the colour i wanted (first time dying, got impatient and thought it wasn't working, haha) so i'm going to get more dye and glue and try again, hopefully in the near future. but like i said, there was definitely a difference, though slight. i imagine with a non-soluble glue, it will be even better.

You could also try liquid frisket.  It's used in watercolor paintings to keep paint off certain areas.  It dries the slightest bit sticky so that when the dye dries you just peel it off.  I use it to mask eyes when I dye G4's.
