I went right for Stephen King in third grade, but goose bumps was good, after that try the fear street series.

Let her read them! So much of the stuff targeted and kids these days is so watered down and lame. When I was a kid we watched scary stuff. And if you lost some sleep over it, so what?! ;)

I read a few when I was about eight.  I don't remember them being particularly scary.

As most others said, I read them when I was a kid and they were mostly pretty funny. There were a few that my mom didn't want me to read, but I suspect she was overreacting. I didn't read all of the books, though, so there may have been some that would have scared me at the time...

If she was okay with the movie, she'll be fine with the books. My sister read all the originals, plus watched the old series and movie. She was 8. It also depends on the kid.
