I just got a G3 Star Catcher (from Sapphire Rain, thanks!) with the soft wings and I noticed the magnet is in the rear hoof which seems unusual to me...then I realized it is so she can stand in rearing pose if placed on a ferrous surface.  So cool!  She's also unusual in that her material is soft like the G1s and has great raised markings.

I am curious, are there other G3s with magnets in the rear hoof, and for what reasons?  Also others with the soft material and/or raised markings?

I also just got a Twinkle Twirl with a mechanism such that you push down on a thing sticking out of her head and she twirls on her toe (hooftip?)...like a clunky top I had as a kid that did that...so cool!  What other G3s have mechanisms in them to do what sort of things?

Finally I also just got a G1 pony with the knob that makes the tail twirl...I'm also curious about what other sorts of mechanisms are out there and what they do....I also got a Brush-n-Gro (Flower Bouquet) that winds up the tail by twisting the head...mine doesn't work :( but mechanisms are fun!  What else do ponies of any generation do?

I got an eBay lot of G3 furniture that do things with the G3 pony magnet such as the treasure chest (aww not secure without a magnet though, but still cool), a stove and a vanity that pop open and a flower on a table that grows...and one that seems like a hairdressing station with a hair dryer and a mirror doesn't do anything, does anyone know what it is supposed to do when it works?

Feel free to post anything about pony mechanisms including in playsets etc!  Pony technology!

Thanks everypony!

I don't think there were any other G3 with cloth wings.  There is a version of Twilight Twinkle that came with the dance studio who has a magnet in her back leg.  The dance studio had a magnet in one of the round dance floors which turned while playing music.

Other mechanical G1 ponies include the bedy bye eyes (eyes that opened and closed),  there was also the set whose tail twirled by squeezing them in the middle.

Oh yes the BBE's I like those.

Uh oh...the dance floor makes her spin by magnet?  I am going to end up collecting playsets, noooooo.

Thanks!

Do you mean Twinkle Twirl?  I don't think Twilight Twinkle got a back hoof magnet.

But yeah, I thought the magnet in the floor of the dance studio was a clever touch.  :)  That was a nice playset in general.

The white part of the vanity should open up to reveal a sink. I think the idea of the piece was that you could convert it between a washing station and a styling station by opening/closing the sink and adding/removing the mirror. Like a very dull Transformer. ;)

G3s didn't have a ton of non-magnetic machinations, but there were five that lit up: Glitter Glide, Loop De La, Graceful Glimmer, Shimmer Shine, and Lily Lightly. (Lily Lightly also blinks her eyes.) Star Catcher's wing type is unique, but Heart Bright and Star Flight have large colorful wings that flap when you push a button on their cutie marks.

Both of the castles have magnetic "dance floors" as well, but the Dance Studio's is the most impressive. The Celebration Castle's version is more like a playground ride, and the Crystal Rainbow Castle's is just a hidden magnet on a stick that you can use to shuffle the pony across the ballroom.

G2 is really where it's at as far as ponies that "do" things IMO. Bobbing heads, jointed legs, magnetic noses, the works! I don't really know enough about them, but it seems like a good portion of the G2s are "enhanced" in that way.

Yes, that's what I meant.

Oooh, so lucky! She's my grail.

Yeah, aside Star Catcher and Twinkle Twirl, there were Star Flight and Heart Bright who both had the pretty wings from 'Two for the Sky' that flap when you press their symbols, and Lily Lightly whose horn lit up as well as her eyes closed.

Ponies with little mechanisms are fun!  There are the G1 Happy Tails ponies, who wag their tails like dogs when you squeeze them.  Hasbro had some really weird ideas near the end of the G1 line in general I think!  There are also the little articulated G4s, some of who can do specific actions with a button or something, like kicking.

I love most of those mechanisms, except some creepy ones like the BBEs...
One of my favorites are the Brush N' Grow, because it allows you to have your pony like you want, with the head movements and the tail length. The only problems i have with it are that when it's broken the pony loses some of his particularity and you can't see it on photos, and also it's hard to know if the tail has been cut or if it's just short thanks to the gimmick.
