Pony Neck Glue & Tail Rust: (icky) Update
« on: April 27, 2016, 03:05:22 PM »
I have a lovely Scoops that needs some TLC. She has some tail rust going on, and when I shake her, I hear something moving around, so figured I should pop her head off and get the gunk out.

You can't really see it, it is much more noticeable in real life.

When I inspected her neck, it looks like there is some glue on there ( it goes around her whole neck, you can see a slight shine of it). All of my other G1 ponies do not have glue on their necks though. I'm wondering if this is part of the year she was released, or was it reglued...?

My real question is: how do I get her head off? Do you think I should even bother, and just use some toothpaste on her tail?

Any help is appreciated!  :frolic:

If you don't take the head off any water on the tail is likely to make the rust worse because it won't dry quickly enough. I'd try to get the head off with a hairdryer instead of hot water then if its been re glued and you can't get it off, at least you didn't get her wet. You could also try strong mending thread dipped in acetone to saw at the glue. I have not tried this.  If you can get the head off, without damaging the neck seam you can de-rust and dry her completely and not have to worry about future problems :) best of luck

Most g1s I've come across already have glue-less heads, either from the glue deteriorating or from previous owners' cleaning jobs, but its certainly possible for heads to still be glued on tight! I have a few g1s who are still firmly together. It is probably best if you take her apart for cleaning though; if you plan on scrubbing her out anyway then hot water is great for helping loosen the glue. Just make sure she's completely dry before putting her back together. :)

Thanks guys! I think I will try the blow dryer route, then water if that does not work. Thanks for the tips :)

...

There's a better way than just wrenching the head off with a lot of strenuous pulling?

...mostly.

Ahaha, I actually just tried that. Was too afraid I would tear the vinyl. Gosh, this stuff is on there good.

So I got her head off! But not without some blood, sweat and tears (literally)

I tried some finger nail polish remover (closest thing I had to acetone on hand) and some floss. Didn't do much at all. It's not pure acetone, so thats probably why, so I tried an xacto knife and a bunch of other tools.

I didn't warm up the glue first, which I should have done, but after some very careful cutting, hard pulling and accidentally stabbing myself, I finally got the lady's head off. Sheesh, they were not messing around with this glue. And:

I'm surprised with the amount of yuck in her! This is my first experience with rusty pony innards, so I was a little...ick.
She had a good bit of dust in her, and the washer is so thin, nearly disintegrated.

Now I'm going to give her an oxy bath, but is this safe for her hair? It is decent enough to keep.
