Thank you for posting Babydoll, Chrissy and Taffeta

Why am I not surprised that your Gusty (good oil' woolies evidence!) has a sticker, but it's not listed on the card?! I noticed on Taffeta's site that the Argos catalogue images just states "ribbon and comb"

What if it was random? Or if they ran out of stickers? Or decided to stop giving stickers part way through the run, so only certain batches got stickers?

Or maybe I just lost mine :P

The fact Chrissytree kept her stickers and remembers them...Chrissytree, can you add a date to those stickers? As in when abouts you received or bought those ponies? If I had Shady when I was 5, that would have been any time up until Feb 1988. I can probably narrow it down more, to be honest, but I am unsure about the sticker. My not remembering it doesn't mean anything, whereas if you have dates for your ponies, it might help clear up where the batches that did and didn't have them came in.

Well... how specific do you want it? Lemma see if I can decipher my original "birthday book". The only problem is that I decided to list them by how old they were, which got very confusing very fast so at one point I deducted their "age" from the current date... but I wasn't very old so I can't be sure if it's accurate. The date is fine, just  not sure about the year.
Gusty and Wind Whistler - 22nd March 1988
North Star - 27th March 1988
Magic Star - 3rd April 1988
Buttons and Shady - 18th June 1988

It's so cute, they're written in kids writing and like "Gusty born March the 22nd 1988" I didn't think I'd be able to find that! I was such an organised child.

That is super cute <3 And I love your records. I knew you'd have something to work with :)

My estimate then is that these ponies were out between the rough time of the movie (I need to check the date for the release of that here, it's on my page in comic ads but I haven't gone and checked it just yet) and the times of your dates. I was 5, that's any time between Feb 1987 and Feb 1988, which fits into your timeline. They're on the 1987 insert but that insert only. They had stickers, but not all of the time - though yours all did.

It really sounds like they just ran out and kept making them without the stickers o.O. Unless the sticker coincided with something like the movie coming out on VHS or something?

Man, I wish I'd asked this question 13 years ago when I started collecting at least I *may* have had some sort of memory then.

Like you said Taffeta, not remembering means nothing.

I've just gone through the family photo album hoping I might have a clear date as to when I got my Shady. I got Shady for Christmas that is clear (my parents always took pictures of me with my Christmas gifts) now usually you can see an annual and thus get a year. Can you see an annual or date in the picture with Shady? Of course you blinking well can't *screams into a pillow*

However you can see the following, the Jolly Postman (published in 1986) a plush Wuzzles Hoppopotamus (sp?) and an MLP calculator with Snowflake on (still have it!) amongst other things like rabbit ear muffs and liquorice allsorts.

I want that calculator. Or at least, a picture of it. Snowflake is awesome :D Pwease..

On topic...

The comic I wrote in is issue 1 of MLP and Friends. So I said Shady was my favourite pony aged 5 some time between the printing of that comic and my 6th birthday.

I didn't get Shady for my 5th birthday because I got DC. I bought Tropical Breeze with my birthday money after that. I have this stupid feeling, though, I had Shady before Tropi. So I think I might have got her in Dec 1986/Jan 1987, with my Christmas money. Because I have this feeling, though Dad was influential in my buying her, she was a pony I chose. And that would also tie in with the movie.

No idea if she had a sticker or not, but I think that's probably where she falls in my pony timeline, if that fits with the printing of MLP Friends issue 1, which I wrote about it in.

:) I am going to start photographing my collection and I'll make sure I get a picture of it ;) it's cute!

Back on topic......

I'm still not 100% sure on the date. I have a feeling it was Christmas 1987?(even though Dad's put the picture in the 1989 album). I deduced this as I got my crimping irons in 1989 and the other images have annuals in, so I can rule out Christmas 1988 :P it's not a birthday picture either because, ear muffs in June?

I don't have any of my comic, I remember sending them to the "paper caper" to be recycled.......

Right now then I'd guess the earlier ones may not have had stickers, and the later ones did? Maybe because they had to go through the process of producing them...

Of course, there must have been two batches. We have two versions of Buttons -and from what I've been told, Buttons with the buttons and stars happened in Scandinavia, and the other, with the 3 buttons, didn't. We definitely had BOTH versions here in the UK. Stands to reason that means we also had stickered ones and non-stickered ones...

And from Chrissytree's dates, it sounds like the stickered ones may have come later. Since PKW, you and I can't remember having stickers, and we probably both had Shady earlier...?

With Buttons, it's unclear which came first, as she was always drawn with buttons and stars in the comic but all the promo material, including the backcard, has her with the same symbol as the US version.

Chrissytree, which Buttons is yours?

I think I have officially lost my mind

My memory is actually a forgetory!!

I was 110% sure I still had Shady's comb (purple sun comb/pick) but when I got all my accessories out over the weekend IT WAS NOT THERE.

I now doubt everything...

I still think that the Christmas photo is either 1986 or 1987.

Unless it got lost with the sticker at some time in the past??

Definitely purple sun pick *nods*. No doubt at all.

And Chrissytree's Buttons having stars completely ruins my theory of the two releases with large buttons being part of a sticker release over here and the other one that went to Sweden and such for sure not having stickers.

I'm reverting back to my other theory, that Hasbro didn't really care to be consistent...

I keep finding pony accessories in weird places, though. I found Songster's boa in my old doll house attic over the summer. Now if only I could find her other earring (sigh).

I know what comb she came with and I don't even have to look it up so I MUST have had the comb at some point. As for the sticker, who knows!!!

Well, Hasbro being inconsistent isn't a new thing :P but it's certainly frustrating.

I was wondering if there were two releases due to Buttons with and with out stars versions.

Thank you for your help

Well, apparently Scandinavia never had the three large button symbol version (I think that's right) whereas we had both. So it would've made sense, except the one Chrissytree had with a sticker came without one in Scandinavia.

I'm pretty sure I'm right about that...
