Have you ever found a suitable coating for TE restoration?
« on: December 19, 2015, 04:54:55 AM »
I don't have any TE ponies on hand, and have never even seen one irl, but I have my first two coming to me soon. Mimic looks to have lost her eye coating. I will NOT use nail polish on her eyes (I don't want to risk any deterioration over the years) and was curious if maybe just a clear acrylic gloss coat would make them look less "dead" or if anyone has ever found a good acrylic coating to restore TE with? I don't mind if she doesn't look ~factory~ since I don't have a whole lot of hope for finding anything that will look exactly like the factory coating, but I'd like her to look less "dead eyed." I tried to use the search feature, but whenever I do I only get posts from a long long time ago and none of them answered my question.

I've never tried it in this application, but what about Pearl-Ex? They're shiny powdered pigments. You might have to mix a few to get the right look, and I recomend testing it with a few different adhesives on something made from a similar type of plastic as the eyes. I would use a very thin coating of whatever adhesive you use.  If you use spray adhesive, cover everything you don't want to glue and hold the can far away from the pony.

That's a great idea Purple Glasses. Maybe you can buy a thing of rhinestones as a test batch Emerald?

I'm looking this up right now. I'd love to test it and do a post about it here and/or on my blog. I'll definitely try to in the new year. Thanks for the suggestion!

I'd love to see how it turns out! It looks like Pearl Ex can be mixed right into clear paint and painted or air brushed on. You might want to try interference colors, I know they show up on black surfaces and since the plastic of the twinkle eye's eyes is already a color that might give you an interesting effect.  Here is an FAQ about the product: https://www.softexpressions.com/help/faq/FAQPearlEx.php#sur

If I still had one of Whizzer's TEs laying around I could test it, I have a few jars of Pearl Ex laying around.
How you want the eyes to look depends on how much pearl ex you use and how you apply it. I've used it for winger wings and about 3 to 4 coats of the powder can give you an opaque look. Interference would be a good choice too if you can find the right colors :)
My DeviantArt, why not drop by and take a look!

Can it be tested on regular rhinestones? I have a WIP TE I'd like to try it on.

Interference powder and varnish are the best bet for TE eyes. Getting the right coloiur can be a bit of a nuisance and will take some testing of various colour combinations but its the best way to restore and allow the restoration to be long term.
