Chelsea's Restorations- G1 Rescued Peachy *NEW 12/7*
« on: August 25, 2015, 10:32:10 AM »
Hi Guys!
I plan on completing a lot of restorations now that I am collecting MLPs, and instead of posting new threads to show my work each time I have decided to just make a general thread where I will post links to pics showing the restorations I have done, as a sort of archive. This way I can still ask advice for rehairs, customization, etc, and not clog the forums with my junk ^^

What I Have Done So Far
G1 Peachy
G1 So-Soft Paradise
G1 TE Bright Eyes (WIP)

G1 Peachy

Last month I was in a grubby flea market at home when I saw this absolutely filthy Peachy sitting in a bin with a bunch of other dirty toys. I bought her and took her home, where I washed her (intensely) and conditioned her dull hair. Interestingly she was missing her tail and only a few parts of her forelock and mane. The rest of her mane remained intact, which led me to wonder why her hair was cut in certain places and ignored in others. Anywho, I bought Tea Rose from Dollyhair and gave it a shot. I only used the Dollyhair to fill in the plugs and make a tail, so some of the newer hair is a bit brighter than the old. Here is what I got!

So-Soft Paradise *Summer 2015
So recently I completed my first restoration of an MLP doll. She's an 80's So Soft Paradise, and was in pretty lousy condition when I purchased her. Her coloration had dulled to a beige instead of her normal white, and someone had cut the top part of her mane and forelock off. The hair may have also been trimmed in other places, and it was pretty faded and formless. After much restyling of her hair, I decided I wanted to just try my luck at restoring her and so I did.

I then proceeded to place her in a hydrogen peroxide bath for about 3+ weeks. I also removed her hair. I barely lost any flocking, and this was the result! She isn't completely brilliant white, but is a lot less yellow than previously.

I ordered some Firebird from Dollyhair, and I used a curved sewing needle to rehair her. This is the final result.

Voila! Let me know what you guys think. I also need some advice; I wasn't really able to secure the new plugs in her mane all that well, and I was wondering, does anyone know a good way to do it? I tried hot glue but it started making a mess so now I figure as long as I am incredibly careful with her hair I will be able to avoid losing hair. In the future, however, I am hoping to avoid this and actually have some way of keeping the plugs from falling out. Please let me know if anyone has any tips!

She looks so beautiful! I never thought how the flocking would make rehairing a So Soft kind of annoying. I wonder if there's some sort of tool you can use to get the hot glue inside the head without it smearing around too much? Some kind of cap for a glue gun? Perhaps if you were quick and precise about it you could use something long and thin to take the glue from the dispenser and smear it in a line along the inside?

Whatever you decide to go with, congrats on a beautiful restoration!

Thank you so much!
And yes, it was a glue gun. A cap would be a good idea; just so that I would be able to reach further inside the head to be able to reach the bases of the plugs. I'll have to look into it.
I am thinking maybe a Popsicle stick would be a good option for smearing the glue inside over the plugs, provided I move fast enough before the glue gets a chance to dry.

Thank you for the advice!

Well done! I would never have the guts to do something like that. Your girl looks so beautiful. :lovey: and I'm sure the both of you feel so much better, the difference in her before and after photos are definitely noticeable. Plus, I think your big hairy dog is cute.

Thank you so much! I definitely think she looks so much better, especially next to my other ponies that are in much better condition.

And thanks ^^ She is a lovable doofus of a dog, and she loves to photobomb~

She is beautiful :) What a great job.

Which tutorials have you tried for rehairing?

I would strongly recommend you try following something like kCherry's tutorial - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lLzRhXc2euA; its brilliantly detailed and she is a moderator here so if you have any questions about anything she says, I am sure she would be happy to help you.
Thank you Matcha for my gorgeous Baby Fifi avi

Thank you so much!

One of the tutorials I followed was for a G4 rehair, but because the style of the dolls are so different and the types of plastic aren't the same, the tutorial wasn't as helpful as it could have been. Still, it gave me the basic steps for how to restore hair. Another source I used were the tutorials posted on the MLP Preservation Project page. They focused more on G1 and gave me a better sense of what I was doing.

Following the hair plug steps were difficult, because the examples I followed used actual doll rehairing tools, while I ended up using a thick curved sewing needle to insert the hair plugs. Who knew it would work! ^.^

This is exactly what I need. I consider myself lucky to have had no serious issues with my first rehair, as I have heard that things can go wrong very easily. I will definitely use the tutorial for the next pony I work on.
