Removing Cigarette smoke
« on: October 17, 2015, 12:43:52 PM »
Just received baby princess Sparkle in the mail and she smells heavily of cigarette smoke.  Right now I have her in a zip lock bag with a candle but was wondering what is the best way to remove/minimize  the smell?  I'm a little uncomfortable about bathing her, the glitter is intimidating for me.

Thank you in advance,
Jodi

There are a bunch of tried and tested methods that you can try, off the top of my head a couple of them are...
- Leaving the pony either on a porch or near an open window to air out
- Putting the pony in a tupperware box or ziplock bag with some kitty litter (if I remember correctly it's about an inch of litter that is needed)
There are probably a bunch of other methods that you could try but I can't remember them at the moment. >_< Good luck!

I just dealt with cigarette smoke on a bunch of ponies recently!  Here's what I did:
1. bath in warm water with Dawn and then dried in front of a fan.  (this is probably optional)
2. Put them outside in the fresh air (it was a really nice day when I did this, I don't know what the weather is like near you, but it's getting pretty cold here now)
3. Spray them with a 50/50 mix of vinegar and water every hour or so.

This got rid of most of the smell, and some of them smelled really bad when I got them!

I got rid of the smoke smell on Chief and Hula Hula through a mixture of throwing them in a ziplock with dryer sheets and airing them out by an open window. Evilbunnyfoofoo suggested the dryer sheet idea to me.

I sometimes run them through the dishwasher.
I assume the candle is white? I would hate for the coloring to rub off on her. I also would hate moisture to get trapped in a baggie and cause mold/mildew or tail rust. Open spaces are best IMO. I also hear of people freezing ponies- not sure if it is for odors or mold. Bakingsoda might work too.

Congrats on getting the elusive BPS. I love her so much I have 8 of her!

Thanks for all the responses.  Will start trying them right away.  Can't stand the smell of stale cigarette smoke so my poor baby princess will remain separated from the rest of the clan until I no longer feel she is a threat   :(

It's a brown candle but she is no longer touching and the bag is now un-zipped so thanks for the heads up.  8 of her !? That is quite impressive

Put your pony standing up in a sealable plastic container filled with baking soda...  Give it a few weeks... change out the baking soda once or twice...

I second the baking soda idea.  I had a lot of ponies that all smelled of cigarette smoke.  Dryer sheets helped but did not completely get rid of the smell (I think the fragrance covers up rather than eliminates the smell).    I rotated through burying a few at a time in a small container filled with baking soda, then washed and dried them fully.  That got rid of the smell for me.

Following this. I bought a lot from Craigslist over a month ago and they still reek. I put them in bags with dryer sheets but it doesn't seem to be helping at all.

All great ideas here :) I go with the 1 week in tupperware with baking soda, 1 week in the open air, 1 week in tupperware with kitty litter, 1 week in the open air - and repeat as necessary. I used to just do baking soda and open air but I have found the different properties of kitty litter and baking soda (absorbing and neutralising) actually helps even more.
