And yet another question...China versus Hong Kong
« on: October 31, 2015, 12:03:44 PM »
Does a pony hold a higher value if it is made in China versus Hong Kong?  I was comparing my two Tux 'n Tails because they are different shade of blues (one is a little brighter) when I noticed one was stamped China and the other Hong Kong.  Just curious, not parting with any time soon.  In fact I have a third one coming to match up with my someday magenta Satin 'n Lace.  Of course he may be lonely for a while  :tumble:

I do not believe there's really any difference in value in this case. I have found the China version of Tux to be more common, at least in my collection. Most of the boys have at least a couple different versions. :)

They're worth the same, all other factors being equal. Of the ponies that were made in both countries, they appear with ~equal frequency and not enough differences to make them desirable as variants in most cases for people to want to collect both.

I personally collect them both!
Looking for a Tux upgrade myself.

I think the China/HK ponies with the most distinct variance are Cuddles & TAF Scoops. The rest of them are not very different just one appears brighter than the other.

I first noticed those on the windy wings / summer wings and flutters  They have slightly different color variations and head sizes (flutters).

I've never noticed a big difference when choosing ponies, though I remember wondering the same thing when I started doing swaps and collecting g1.

The only time they tend to price higher is when you get someone will to pay more in order to complete a collection. As a general rule, most collectord are not specifically collecting one or the other therefore the price tends to remain about the same.

I noticed a difference between them when I was prepping a bunch of ponies for customizing.  It was something about the rooting pattern, I just turned to my mom and said "I bet this one is a China pony," so I looked and it was.

I think the China/HK ponies with the most distinct variance are Cuddles & TAF Scoops. The rest of them are not very different just one appears brighter than the other.

Often the distribution is regional, too. I think that for example recently HK Cherry Treats MOC sold higher than she might have done if she was the Chinese version because for some reason the HK one seems to discolour more quickly than the CHinese version (without the forelock). But, here in the UK as far as I know, all Cherry Treats released were made in China. Certainly I've not seen one yet that wasn't. And mine from childhood is still very white. So things like that can influence the amount people pay for HK/China.

I don't go looking for HK/China variations in sets unless I stumble on them accidentally, but the Starlight Babies exist in both versions too. And NC. I have only just got the HK Mischief from Ponycon and haven't had a chance to compare her with my other four yet, but the fact there are distinct variations between the three Made in China ones I have and the fact that at a glance the HK one doesn't seem as drastically different makes me think that a lot of the colour variation comes from batch and not necessarily where they are made.

Just, China made ponies seem more common in the later years in Europe.
