Sunfading a purple pony?
« on: August 26, 2015, 01:40:33 PM »
I've checked out the tutorial on sunfading, which is great :) But I couldn't find mention of this pony anywhere. Is Daddy Bright Bouquet safe to sunfade? I'd hate to lose his lovely light purple colour, but he has quite a lot of ink stains. Has anybody made any experiences with this pony or other light purple ponies? Thanks for your tips and opinions :)

I've only just started into sunfading coloured ponies (white ponies I've done a few).  I tend to cover up most of the body except for the marks, but I that depends on how widespread the marks are.  If there's scribble all over I think people tend to just cover the hair/eyes/symbols and fade the whole body whereas a bigger mark you spot-fade just that area.  Definitely ask for more answers tho as there's lots of experienced collectors on here :)

Would you mind sharing your experiences when the coloured ponies are faded? :) And what ponies are you fading at the moment?
I'll definitely cover most of his symbols up, though that will be a lot of work with Daddy Bright Bouquet :D I'm just so worried he'll lose his lavender color. I've heard and read that sunfading pink or pinkish ponies is a big no-no.

The ones I'm doing at the moment are yellow ponies-- Munchy and Baby Lucky Leaf.  They both have stains, Munchy's come out great the baby is taking a bit longer.  Haven't had any colour fading thankfully!
I guess the big thing with sunfading is to check them often.  I usually check every few days but it's winter here so pretty slow going anyway.  In summer I'd check daily.
(Also for TAF ponies with tons of symbols, I use blu tack to cover symbols/blush/eyes.  I haven't tried the acrylic paint method which scares me a bit, but blu tack is fairly quick and easy.)
I'd like to hear more about other colours and how they react.

Isn't Blu-tac full of grease tho? Maybe they changed it, but I remember paper having blu-tac on it for too long getting huge fat stains... and I'm thinking maybe that's not the best thing to put on a pony for an extended period of time :S but then again, they might have changed it.  Yellow usually goes well with sunfading, as far as I know :) Purple is trickier, but I think the kind of pinkish purple that Daddy Bright Boquet is isn't as easily faded?

Purple is pretty unstable to begin with. You'll find a lot of purple ponies will leach pigment. When pigment leaches you end up with head/body mismatch. Of the array of ponies I've faded I've not had to fade a purple one (and I usually always have a pony in the window year round). If the pigment is stable (aka when you wipe body the cloth doesn't come out red) I would say give a try at fading. Just as was said keep a close eye and cover up what you don't want faded because purple is very unstable.

I would be careful with the bluetac as well - some of the chemicals could actually further discolour the pony underneath.

As to sun fading this colour in particular: As has been mentioned purple is a nuisance colour in general as it fades out/yellows/greys very easily. Any sunfading, of any colour, will risk loosing some of the colour of course. In fact, everyone who has ever sun faded will have faded anything they exposed to sun light. The key is to cover as much of the body as possible and to ensure you never fade far enough its noticible. Anything like pen marks will fade faster than the actual colour of in the polymer used during the manufacture process. So you should be fine. Just cover as much of him as possible and keep as close an eye as you can on him.
