Tell me about the Portland area?

Oregon that is. My husband could stay at his current job and make good money but have to keep saving mismanaged projects. There is no more opportunity for growth where he's at and he isn't really interested in any companies in the area (one company has offered him a job 3 times but he doesn't want to drive that far every day.)
How are the schools? Which 'burb is best?
I've been in Austin for almost 25 years now and between the heat and the city changing so fast I just gotta get outta here! I was a military brat so I've been all over and really wanted to stay in my adopted hometown but at my age, even 2 years north would do me good!
So, tell me about it if you've been there, live there etc...

Well I live a few hours north near Seattle, but for what I know of Portland, it is a very fun easy going place. Cost of living is decent, lots of families there, lots of business opportunities. I know a couple people who live there and absolutely love it.
