MonstarNomNom has a wonderful tutorial, somewhere. @_@

But, I've always used a pushpin and thin gauge floral wire. And needle nose pliers, of course!
Let me see if I find the tutorial.

make sure you unravel the yarn and use 1 (or 1/2 of 1) of the fiber strands at a time, otherwise the needle of the Tool will break as it tries to put too big a piece through too small a hole in the head.

I also recommend a size 24 tapestry/embroidery needle.

If I'm rerooting a fashion style size I will actually purposefully split several plug holes.  That makes it easier to insert a whole big plug of yarn at once AND takes strain off the holes from having too much forced into them.  Just make sure you seal it up well when you're finished.
