Experience with pindot and repinking?
« on: June 22, 2015, 06:33:32 PM »
I have a TAF Yum Yum who has some trouble with pindot on her legs, and her hair has become quite dull. I'd really love to have her fixed up as best as possible in both regards. Does anyone have experience with these two things? If so, I'd be happy to hire you to help restore Yum Yum to her former beauty!

I've re-pinked many a pony. This is something you could do on your own hon. Quite simple, just rit dye, and hot water, rinse with cold water. Once you're done soap the hair out. I've used rose crystals and they're OK. Quick dips work just fine. The longer you leave the hair in the darker the pink.
Le gasp! She's re-pinked!

As for pindot, I refuse to boil or subject a pony to oxy so I have no advice in that regard...

Do you cover up her body during the process? Or is it easy enough to just dip the mane without getting the body into the dye?

The MLP Preservation Project has a tutorial on removing pindot. It looks like you just stick the pony's body under steaming water, cover the area in Dawn dish soap, scrub, and repeat.

I've never actually had the dye bleed onto the plastic. Caution is always recommended. I never dip the whole head in. If the ears get wet I wash the pony quickly with water or soap and water. It wouldn't hurt to wrap the head in tinfoil/tape if you'd like/to be completely safe. I just pinked a Posey not too long ago and nothing bled onto the plastic. I know there are more detailed tutorials over in customs. :o) Good luck with whatever route you choose!

The hardest thing for me is getting the colour just right.  I feel the plain RIT dye as it is comes out too... sort of dusky pink I guess.  I like to add just the tiniest amount of yellow to get a slightly orangey hue that matches the Hasbro pink a bit better.  Even then, I prefer to just add a touch of pink to ponies rather than a strong colour cos I feel it's more natural.

I'haven't had problems of colour bleeding into the plastic as I'm using a fairly weak dilution and then re-dipping to make it a bit stronger.  I use a teaspoon to do the roots and have the tap nearby so I can rinse off any that gets on the pony.

Good luck!! :)

Thanks, all.

Will tackle the pindot this morning.

This whole pony of the day thing is really helping me to give my ponies the TLC they deserve!

Using really hot water, Dawn and your thumb nail works GREAT to get pindot out! It took me a long time (4 days of about an hour each day) to clean up one of my ponies, but she came out perfectly. Just scratch at each dot like you're trying to pick at a sticker to get it off and take your time. You'll be really happy with the results :)

I have no nails, alas!

I tried really hard with the scratchy side of a sponge, but I don't feel like I got anywhere. The dots are very very light but have a slight roughness to them. Is that normal, or do you think that is from a previous owner taking a brillo pad to her? It is so light that it leads me to believe someone else got most of it off, but not all.

A butter knife works really well for pin dot. I would end up trashing my nails if I used them but a flat edged knife is perfect for the same effect :)

I've brillo paded a sundance that I FBR'd but then didn't like the color. I left some nice lines of scratches on her body. It was noticible under bright light.
