Is tracking available to Denmark?
« on: June 09, 2015, 12:17:48 AM »
Can anyone confirm whether tracking is available to Denmark with first class US postage?

I need to return a pony I bought from a Danish Ebay seller, and we'd both like to get tracking.  I know the US post is a pain about tracking for first class international packages, and it's only available to some countries if you buy postage online.  I found the list of counties that have available tracking, and Denmark is on it, but there's an asterisk indicating that tracking service was suspended in June of 2014.  Does anyone know if it's been restored?

Looks like the page hasn't been updated in a while.  *sigh*

Thanks!!

Good question since the other postage options with tracking are way more expensive :(  I'm not from the US but I can see if I can find anything out

No, there is no official tracking for us first class packages. However, you can track the customs form until it leaves the US and then when it arrives in customs in Denmark and clears customs. But that's about it.

I have shipped many times to Denmark with First Class International and it most always has been tracked. I don't think you have anything to worry about. If you are worried though the only real tried and true tracking is if you ship Global Express and it is beyond expensive  -_-

I started to fill out the online forms for first class international postage to Denmark, and it said, "Electronic USPS Delivery Confirmation International - Service temporarily suspended."  That means that tracking isn't available, right?  I feel like I can't know for certain until it gives me the shipping label to print, and in order to see that, I have to buy the postage.  Obviously I don't want to buy the postage if I'm not going to use it.

Why is this so complicated?!  Every other developed country in the world has tracking available with first class international shipping!

This is from USPS's website.

Quote
Effective June 12, 2014, the Postal Service™ is temporarily suspending Electronic USPS Delivery Confirmation International™ service to Brazil, Denmark, France, Gibraltar, Italy, Luxembourg, and Portugal because recent performance evaluations conducted by the Postal Service for these destinations are not satisfactory.
Consequently, we are revising Mailing Standards of the United States Postal Service, International Mail Manual (IMM®) Exhibit 232.122 and Exhibit 252.22 to indicate that we have temporarily suspended this service to these destinations.
Nonetheless, copies of the customer-generated electronic combined shipping and customs label (PS Form 2976, Customs Declaration CN 22 — Sender’s Declaration) will continue to include the Post Exprès logo and the markings “E-DELCON SERVICE.” The continued use of these labels will make it possible for the Postal Service to evaluate scanning performance at these destinations. When scanning performances at these destinations reach a satisfactory level, we will make subsequent announcements and IMM revisions regarding this service to these destinations.
Until that time, customers should have no expectation of tracking information (such as the date and time an article was delivered, or that a delivery was attempted but not completed). Customers who need tracking information to Brazil, Denmark, France, Gibraltar, Italy, Luxembourg, and Portugal should purchase Global Express Guaranteed® service, Priority Mail Express International® service, or Priority Mail International® service (but not Priority Mail International Flat Rate Envelopes and Small Flat Rate Priced Boxes).

In short without reading all that, it seems that while they did suspend it, they are still scanning packages to these destinations to see the performance level. It seems that while the USPS was guaranteeing packages to be tracked to these destinations, the respective countries postal services were not following through on scanning the items when they arrived.   So therefore USPS just can not guarantee it will be tracked for sure until those countries meet a satisfactory level.

I fear it does not necessary depend on the recipient country (within Europe, at least).
I have recently had a tracked US package get lost already in my city.  tracking was available all the way through, even after the package left the US, but when it did not get delivered (it left the sorting facility in my city and was forwarded for delivery - which never happened) it turned out the tracking is only a visible addition, but does not offer any kind of coverage: upon opening a claim for not received package it turned out that this method, while tracked, does not really qualify as a tracked package after it left the US, and while technically it shows up as tracked (updates its status) when it does get lost they no longer look at it as a tracked one and thus our claim got declined with no refund >_<
it does not enecesary work the same way in Denmark, just wanted to give a heads up regarding that overseas packages are sometimes treated differently in Europe, and it's not the tracked status that is problematic, the problems come once something unusual happens to the package :S and if you have already sent tracked packages to other countries before and they arrived fine, these issues might have still occurred, should those packages get lost on the way. to me this would be much more frightening than whether a tracking shows updates or not.

I hope you'll be able to find the best option possible to send your pony back!
