Mane and tail question!

Sorry if this has been gone over before, but has anyone ever tried using something that wasn't hair for a custom's mane and/or tail?  I've had this idea for a custom nagging at me in the back of my mind, but the only thing I can think to do to achieve the look I'd want would be to use artificial Spanish moss. I know you can buy real, dried Spanish moss as a crafting material, but I'd be concerned about it breaking down quickly unless it's somehow treated.  Would this possibly damage a pony? Is it even a realistic possibility?

I've never done a custom before, but I keep getting these ideas for ponies I want to see, lol. If you own or have created any ponies with non-hair for their mane/tail, please let me know what you used and how it worked out! Pictures are always welcome as well, of course

I have seen some great experimental manes and tails, so I don't think your idea is bad at all! I'm not familiar with working with moss, but I think it should be possible to use it for hair.

Artificial moss sounds like a better idea to me, anything organic (even feathers which are pretty common as craft materials) can break down over time and dried moss sounds like something quite brittle. But artificial one could work, I assume it's something like the materials available for model railroad sceneries and such?

Your idea sounds intriguing, I'd love to hear more or see a sketch! Don't be afraid of experimenting, sometimes it's the craziest ideas that result in the most amazing customs!
