Sunfading coloured ponies
« on: April 21, 2015, 03:34:57 AM »
I've had great success sunfading white ponies that have gone yellow.  Now I'm wanting to try removing stains from coloured ponies.  The ones I want to restore are also quite rare (Munchy and Baby Lucky Leaf) I don't want to go in without knowing what I'm doing!

I know that sunfading works by photodegradation (thanks, mlp preservation project! :read:) and is supposed to lighten/bleach any colour.  My question is, should I:

a) cover up just the symbols/hair and place the pony in the sun (and turn the pony over to ensure even fading), or
b) cover up the entire pony, with just a hole exposing the actual stain.

I mean, I don't want the body colour itself to fade.  (Is that something that can happen, the actual body colour fading from yellow to pale yellow?  That would sort of spoil the ponies!)

I've only ever seen photos of people sunfading whole ponies... guess I'm a bit nervous to risk changing the body colour at all!  (What about darker coloured ponies?  Can you sunfade say, marks from a dark pink or purple pony, like Hula Hula or Pretty Beat?  I mean, it takes quite a bit of UV to get rid of marks.  Would a dark pink pony come out looking Cotton Candy a few weeks later?

(Any other anecdotes of your sunfading experiences would be awesome to hear if you'd like to share them!)

I have being sunfading ponies wit great results, I cover the hole pony using alumin foil or a piece of cloth

I live in central america so the sun is harsh, we are at 35c in this days, since you are at Australia I supose the sun is similar (or harsher?)

For example right now I'm sunfading a Bubbles that has a stain from some cheap doll hair I used years ago to replace the tail since I didn't had nylor hair at the time

I used an old sock to cover the hole pony and only leave the area I wanted to sunfade

This are the pics after a couple of months of sunfading

If you are just sun fading a mark then cover the rest of the pony (especially hair, eyes, symbols and blush). UV light will bleach the colour out of the plastic (although it can take a long time and a lot of exposure for that) and while its unlikely to make a massive difference if the pony is in the sun long enough its just not worth the risk. :)
Thank you Matcha for my gorgeous Baby Fifi avi
