How on earth do you do multiple colors in the hair when gradient dying it?

I imagine by folding a loop in the hank and dipping/rinsing it. Kind of like tie-dying... But not.

I mix powered rit dye with conditioner to make a paste, and use just like human hair colour.

I know some use even just a diluted acrylic paint, but in my experience it leaves the hair rather dry.
