The Debox Dilemma
« on: March 01, 2015, 07:38:30 PM »
I collect G3 ponies that are in mint condition but aren't boxed. I have two ponies on my wishlist that I've been trying to find in that condition, but can only find them MIB. Should I buy them and debox them or continue to hold out for ones that are already freed from their packages? The value of the ponies MIB is about $30-$35 each.

As long as you are willing to pay the price for an item, I think you have the right to do as you wish with it once it is yours. The question of whether to buy those are not will ultimately come down to your own conscience. Personally, I don't keep stuff in packaging unless I don't have space for it. Unboxing a G3 wouldn't phase me in the slightest.

I've read on this board about cases where unboxing resulted in a G1 pony losing hundreds of dollars in value. For a pony with a market value of $35? Unboxing seems pretty safe! (I say this as a toy collector who would much, much rather hold things in her hands!)

Not a big fan of deboxing ponies of any generation. I have a few G3's that I purchased new with the intention of freeing but never had the heart to do so (even bought a duplicate of one to open and never did). If they're already at that value it would make it really difficult for me personally to let them loose...

If it was me, I'd buy and debox. I have lots of G3's I haven't opened yet that I can't wait now to open when I get shelves up in my new place and I have a few G2's I'm going to open too cause I wanted them with their accessories X D

But yeah all up to how you feel about paying that much for them and opening

The Birthflowers are quite hard to find, so I would not debox.  The Halloween almost has to be deboxed as the outfit caused staining.  Me personally I would not debox, but it is a very personal choice.

Its very much your call :) With G3s you will devalue but you dont devalue so much that it will make your eyes water so if you wished to release them to the wild you should. However both ponies do pop up loose so it may very well just be worth trying some tactics and a little extra time to track them down loose than be in a to debox or not to debox scenario.
