Feeling discouraged about collecting?
« on: January 22, 2015, 12:23:44 PM »
So..I don't really have a "collector's gene" I suppose. While I like finding ponies at random at flea markets and thrift shops, I don't really enjoy the thrill of the hunt of searching down specific ponies on my wishlist-especially when they're new releases.

I feel like I've been out of the pony game for awhile now and I come back to find G4 is actually releasing new ponies! I was smitten with FS Sunset Shimmer (btw, is Coco Pommel still going to be released?) and was disappointed when the first two stores I went to didn't have her. Finally my fiance found her at a different store and I'm so thrilled to have her. I've been researching more about the new ponies I've missed and love Holly Dash and Diamond Mint, only it seems they're not released in the US. With funds so low right now I can't afford spending the $20+ they go for on ebay, and it's disappointing when I know if they were sold in Target they'd be $5.

I guess I sound spoiled since the US tends to get all the releases, so I apologize. I just feel down since I'm afraid that if I wait their price will get even higher, but I just can't swing what they cost right now either since they're not available in local stores.

Collecting should be a fun hobby, not something to make you feel stressed or down. Just grab the ones you can find easily and be happy of your finds for now. I'm sure most collectors have times when they want something they can't quite afford but that just takes patience to wait that you can save up for them or their price starts coming down. Who knows, the ponies you're seeking might still show up on the shelves in the near future or you might spot them thrifting in a couple of years. ^.^

I am with Mirn - do not ever let ponies get you down. Especially ponies which are currently retail. Just look at G3 and how even the ponies we were paying a premium for 10 years ago are not worth very little. If you dont get Holly now, give it some time and she will pop up second hand at a much more reasonable price I am sure. Or you could see if an Arena member can track her down at cost for you from their local stores? Then you will be able to get her sooner rather than later. As for Diamond Mint - she is up on Hasbro Toy Shop and has been discovered in a lot of US stores so you will find her in stores soon enough.

Its not being spoiled to have your heart set on something and then not manage to track it down. I have certainly felt this way in the past. And if you have high hopes you will feel a little flat when they are not met.
Thank you Matcha for my gorgeous Baby Fifi avi

I have hope that Holly will get another release eventually so I'm not as upset with her but I'm currently feeling this way about the second wave of Snowglobe Ponies (Cadence and Twily). I'm also feeling this way about a couple of Novi Stars that seem to have only been sold in Russia so I can't even find them on ebay.

I seconded Mirnyj and hathorcat.
Just enjoy the the ponies. Do not stress about them. Get the ones you love and what you can afford. Then eventually you will find the rest you want and in the price range that you can afford. :)
Pony collecting should be fun hobby. Do not take the pressure that your collection is not complete if you do not have this or that. Just enjoy your ponies and enjoy the hunt while getting the ponies what you want in low prices ;).

Yeah girlie, you dont have to 'catch em' all' right away! G4s are all over the internet right now- and so are G3s and even G1! Ive always thought of MLP as a laid back hobby I can enjoy and buy my favorites whenever I can and try to complete sets later on when they sell for cheap on ebay in lots. Heck, im STILL kind of lazy getting some toy sets from 2010-2011! x'D I still dont have any of the new RR EQG and only a few of the new ones. You can pretty much focus on whatever else you're collecting and always have ponies later! ;-) Holly  WILL eventually be here in the US for retail in store, and Diamond Mint will eventually show up too- she is still super new! As for Coco, she still needs to show herself so you arent missing much :P Relax, kick back, and enjoy ponies!!! B-)
