I think I'm in the minority for thinking she's one of the ugliest ponies released...

::zips up flame-retardant suit::

Well everyone is entitled to their opinion of course.  I actually think she is really pretty because of the green, but I'll admit that when the price spiked the first time, I didn't hesitate to sell her when I was a starving student for some extra $$-  and while I'd love to have her back, I am hoping I'll stumble across her at the thrift store or flea market again...

I personally don't like Mimic and have no desire to own her, but that's of no consequence.

I popped in to suggest that this question, and any other similar questions, be made into an FAQ stickied on the forum. It gets asked frequently enough!  :P
It would be a neat thread for any new collectors, full of general knowledge... and if they've got a questioned still unanswered we're of course all happy to help. ^.^

So when someone owns a Mimic pony that means they're officially an MLP collector? :/ what about someone who owns G3 Rosey Posey the Children's Charity Ball hospital pony? ;_;

NO, you can be a MLP collector without owning a Mimic.

There is an aspect to any form of collecting. It can be MLP, it can be transformers it can be beanie babies. Regardless of IF the item really is rare - sometimes certain items gain and become a status symbol.

If you want me to compare it to something, it's a bit like the flu - one person, somewhere at some time decided to pay more money for a Mimic - people talked about it - and it became like an infection.

They were talking about this 15 years ago, wondering why people were willing to pay more for a pony that seemed relatively common. I'm not saying she's a Peachy or a Sundance; but I have never saw where Mimic was any rarer or limited compared to the other ponies in that set.

It's more of a situation where she has gained status because of a snowball effect. If you notice from what others have pointed out in this thread. We don't go very long in the MLP online community without someone bringing Mimic up and asking why she is so popular.

It becomes more snowball, getting bigger and bigger - and people come up with all sorts of reasons for why. Even things about her being short boxed and other such things. And then those 'ideas' become a reality because people just repeat it in a thread. So more snowballing downhill, making the status bigger.

So, with the flu comparison, it's a shared thing, one person giving it to another, because some are willing to pay more for a pony that is perceived to be rare or because it's a pony that for the last 18+ years gets brought up in the community.

This thread has just infected another collector with Mimic Flu, the cure is apparently to either buy a Mimic OR already have one.
Probably doesn't own a stolen piece of the Taj Mahal.
