Any Birders Here?
« on: December 28, 2014, 03:20:01 PM »
Need some help with an ID - apologies for some of the picture quality, the first day we saw this duck I had forgotten to put my daughters card back in her camera so shot on memory and since it was almost full the camera automatically lowered the settings.  The second day we saw em it was drizzling.  We have not seen it since but would still love to try and figure out who it was - I am leaning towards some kind of funky cross.

And now for someone else a bit different - as far as we can figure it is a Canadian X Domestic Goose cross!  The first one I have ever seen and I have been birding for years (and years)

Thanks for looking!

That goose is pretty cool!  Canada geese do come in a leucistic form, they can be either faded to brown, or all white. They can also be piebald, with patches of white. The all white head and neck could be a strange manifestation of either form. Or it could be a cross, as you suggested, though I would expect more in the clutch to look odd  if that were the case.

I am not finding anything similar on Birds of North America, whatbird.com, so the duck has me stumped.

Thanks thunderwing, maybe I shall post em both to my local Audubon chapter FB page.   Though I have not had much luck getting responses there.

Had some help on my FB page, the duck is most likely a Ring Necked Female, the books did not show quite as much white, but photos of real ones did show almost that much.

And the goose will it looks to be a Snow Goose/Canada cross!
