toys or materials
« on: November 12, 2014, 08:40:30 PM »
so i'm curious. i know that alot of people customize mlp or even mh etc.

but how do people feel about customizing other toys?
for me i will buy toys, just to customize them.
i try to sell off the parts i don't need like clothes and such, but otherwise yeah.

some of the ones i'm currently customizing are the disney animator dolls.
just bought a few off the site to customize (they were on sale!! )
but i won't list which characters as some might be upset.

so how do you feel about customizing other toys, and if you do it, which toys have you re-made? very curious.

I think customizing any toys is awesome! Oh can I ask what you are making them into? I always wanted to customize a doll like a MH or something but they intimidate me more than ponies do.

most of the animator dolls are being made into oc characters. but i did do one as jessica rabbit.

for mh i either do ocs, favorite characters or what ever the yarn guides me.

i have a whole list of doll projects, future and current in the mh arena.
aside from ocs and swaps, i find little inspiration for pony customs. it's sad, but i think it's ok.

Are there any good tutorials for customizing the MH dolls? I would love to make my two Marvel ocs.

Nah, I don't actively go out to customize  other toys and haven't customized ponies in years, though I still could if I wanted to :)

also curious as to what people use primarily for customizing.
i've switched almost entirely from dollyhair to mohair and soft yarn.
just so much easier to work with.

In my mind, if you pay for it, you can do whatever you want with it. I LOVE customizing toys! Sometimes, it's something simple like fixing something that the manufacturer screwed up, other times it's because I want it to look a certain way. I realize that my customizations may make it difficult to re-sell later, but I never intend to part with the ones I work on. And, you never know, somebody just might think my hard work is worth paying more for the figure than a regular one.

I actually just finished customizing a Duke L'Orange Mighty Duck figure. The whole process is on my Tumblr if you want to see what all I did to him. Here's a photo of the before and after as well as a screengrab so you can see what he's supposed to look like:

Gemini_pony, if you've ever customized a MLP, then you've got the skills for customizing a MH doll. Everything I've learned from working on ponies was used on Duke and any other project I work on. Ponies may have started it, but the skills can be used anywhere. There's an awesome customizing forum here and everyone is very free with information on how to achieve certain effects. If you want to know anything, feel free to drop me a message any time and I'll do my best to help!

I've customized r/c vehicles like xmods as well as larger vintage ones. I use the same paint that I use for customs, as well as the same sealant and it works out well :)

I used to make custom strawberry shortcake dolls-  but not so much anymore.

I really enjoy other people's customs, especially Monster High and fashion doll customizers- there are some amazing face-up artists out there!

I've done MH before. I have no tutorials but it's not alot different from ponies. If you have any specific questions, I'll answer if I can. You are going to want a good sealer and there will likely still be wear on the joint paint though.
