All of my ponies had their Hasbro-given names except SHS Bright Night.  I never could remember her name so I just called her Tek after a character in "Birth of the Firebringer."

I don't remember. Probably not always. If the name a toy or stuffed animal came with doesn't suit them, I give them another one.

Almost all of mine were secondhand so I didn't even know they came with names. I do recall getting Tuneful on card, but i was too young to read. It wasn't until I started collecting as an adult that I discovered they all had names. Needless to say, I about lost my mind.

Definitely not. They all had Finnish names in my herd. :P

Mostly this. And most of the names were more or less translations of the original names.

My sister TwistedRiver named a lot of her ponies and when she gave me a few out of her collection when I was still really little those names stuck. To this day it's hard for me to call them their official names. XD Kingsley is Paws, Tropical Breeze is Flamingo... I'm trying to remember who else there was. Just pointed her to this thread so she can share more.  :P

Squeezer was by far the most creative. At the beginning of Rescue at Midnight Castle, the narrator says "starring Sandy Duncan and Tony Randall" just as Bowtie trots into view. Well Bowtie looked like Squeezer, so she was named "Tony Randall" for the longest time.

 :haha: This made my day!

Oh jeeze I had a lot of ponies that didn't keep their original names. xD I knew almost all of them but some of their names just didn't stick for me and then there were a few I got second hand so their names were often made up. And of course my childhood friend also collected ponies so a lot of the time whoever got the pony first was allowed to keep the real name and the other one needed a new one.
Off the top of my head, other than the ones Hannah mentioned, Tex was named Marty, (after a character in some Judy Bloom book that I loved at the time) Princess Tiffany who's name I didn't know since she was second hand was oddly enough named Tiffany (after the singer who was popular at the time) Toppy was named Speedy because he loved to run fast, Big Top was named Clown, my Baby Sleepyhead was also named PJs or PJ (which was short for Pickle Juice -don't ask-) Masquerade's name was shortened to Mask, he was also Marty's younger brother,  Caramel Crunch was named Popcorn, Baby Northstar was named Southstar, Curly Locks was named Rapunzel (imagine my surprise when I discovered there REALLY was a Rapunzel) Baby Countdown was named Rocket, Baby Drummer was named Micky after one of the Monkees, High Flyer was named Dragonfly, Baby Ribbs was named Dragon, Streaky was named Music, and I'm sure that there was a bunch more than I am completely forgetting. Needless to say though most of my ponies kept their official names a lot of them ended up with new names.

I was too young when I got my MLPs to read/learn their names. I actually never really had names of any kind for them, even though I played with them a lot! I think it made a kind of sense to me that animals wouldn't have human-style names for themselves :P I think I might have known Lemon Drop's name (due to getting the Show Stable when I was a bit older).

I do remember when I first started using the Internet that I was super excited to find Dream Valley and I spent ages tracking down the names of every pony in my collection (as well as some ponies I remembered my friends owning).

For my Whizzer I never knew her name and I'm pretty sure I kept changing her name to whatever I liked, but my g3s that I bought I stuck to thier given names, wisteria and tink-a-tink-a-too.
Though about  last yearI got the activity club g1 baby pony, the blank one with no name, so I have named her Baby Dove :)

Not intentionally.  I was too young to read and didn't care. P:
"How much for the horse tornado?"
"Sir, that's a carousel."
"I must have it!"
