I don't think there's a definitive answer. There are a lot of ponies that have multiple versions of themselves, so how many times should they count? How different does a pony have to be? You have flat foot Cotton Candy, concave, mail order, babies with regular and BBE versions, and then others where there is very little if any difference between them at all, even if they were sold over multiple years or in different ways. If you go by name, well there are ponies who double up on names as well. Toss in variants and pat. pending vs. non, and different countries of origin even for the standard US releases... it gets very messy.
If it helps, I include different versions e.g. long/short hair, cf/ff, but don't include pat pend/non-pat pend. in my list, but if they turn up here, sometimes they just, ummm, stay, to, you know... hang out and.. stuff.
There are even multiple versions of the flutters which are different enough people may factor them as different ponies while you think do you include ponies like Lavender Woosie and are you counting non pearly and pearly baby sea ponies as one pony or two?
