g4 pony hair styles
« on: September 14, 2014, 09:39:04 PM »
is it just me or does it seem like most g4 collectors either style their ponies to be 'show accurate' or just don't style them at all?
I feel like whenever I see a pic of a g4 pony their hair is still in that factory twist thing hasbro does, sometimes it's even still banded to their leg. or if it's not that, their hair is just wild and crazy.
I'm not trying to be negative about it but I just can't help but notice that more and more whenever I see pix of g4 ponies. I mean, people can do whatever they want of course, it's their ponies. but to me, having some sort of style or at least washing and brushing out their hair is one of the best parts of collecting ponies.

anyone else notice this?

Most people buying new ponies don't style the hair, IMO.  I definitely noticed it with G3s too.  I rarely wash the hair on new ponies, it's just too much of a pain.

I guess I'm in the minority then, it drives me crazy knowing one of my ponies or dolls has unkempt hair lol

I only leave G4 hair alone if it actually turned out nice when I removed it from the box..
Otherwise I give them a wash and style their hair in whatever way I can get it looking nice with how it's naturally curling/lying (if that makes sense) I often use those little clear elastics, especially on tinsel hair x/
I don't care about show accuracy.. to me G4s are different ponies from their cartoon versions :p

^This! I always feel compelled to wash and  condition the ponies' hair, since some of them have such dry-feeling, slightly "wild"/frizzy hair once opened.  I don't always "style" it, but I do at least wrap it around their necks or legs and secure with a paper towel and clear elastic to dry.  But then again, I only collect the Fashion Style ponies from the G4 line. I do think it's almost amazing the difference washing, conditioning, and gently combing their hair can make in their appearance.

And I'm probably the minority here, but I'm not really a fan of those tiny straw curls.  I mean, they're very pretty, but I prefer the looser waves. I think my FS Pinkie Pie was the only one I've really done straw curls on and felt like they looked "right".

I only give the 'classy' treatment to them. Washing, wrapping around the leg untill them
are dry and its done.

the show hairstyles are too complicated to make well done if you not are an expert, and also requires scissors....and I HATE use scissors on my ponies...

I stopped taking my G4 brushables out of their boxes because I hate dealing with their hair.  I have all of the FS ponies out of their boxes, and I just washed their hair and that was it.  Some of the hairstyles are just a bit too much for me to try and make them look accurate ("mane-ly" Rarity.  See what I did there?! ).

I may attempt to do their correct hairstyles on the giant, ponyzilla dolls.

It does annoy me to see frizzy hair, or hair that has been cut to the point of just looking terrible.  I'm not so picky about that, but it doesn't hurt to just wash and wrap the hair around the leg at the very least.

yeah i think that's kinda how i feel, like if you're not going to or don't want to style or brush a pony's hair it may as well just be MIB. I'm not too fond of show accurate styles either, especially considering most of the mane 6 require some cutting and I like to keep pony hair it's natural length.
I'm definitely looking forward to styling the zilla ponies too! especially since I don't think I've seen any of them styled yet.
and yes I agree, the leg wraps/curls look really nice and are a great go-to style for ponies of any gen.

If I open mine I always try to brush the natural curl so it stays nice if they come out the box a bit crazy. It's just part of the G1 collector in me that likes to preserve "original" curl. I will wash them if they're particularly bad though. I just don't care for G3's that are washed and wrapped around the leg:/ If I'm going to wash a G3, she's getting curlers to give her a bit more style because the hair just doesn't retain that fluffy soft curl that they had coming out of the box:/

The only "style" I give to any pony is how she was originally released so for me my G4s do just have straight brushed sleek hair :) Thats what I prefer.

I know styling hair however is a big thing for a lot of collectors but its not how I prefer to display - so I think its just all down to personal preference. What works for someone does not work for someone else.

I have teased my G4 ponies a bit to make them look somewhat presentable, but I haven't washed their hair or done any serious styling.  To keep them mint in box would be taking up space that I don't have.

When G4 first came out I styled all my ponies' hair, but I eventually got away from doing it.
