Author at Work

Ohhhh boy.  So I have tossed the idea of writing a historical novel around for the last ten years or so.  Various snippets of plot, landscape depictions, etc., it's all in my head.  For whatever reason yesterday, I grabbed a notebook and a pencil and started hand-writing it all out!  I'm on page 8 so far... 

My focus is Northern Canada, in the mid 1790's.  Fur trade, voyagers, Western exploration... 

Now all I need to do is write enough of it so that once someone reads it, and has a criticism, it won't shut me down in the first few chapters.

Yay for writing!  I'm so happy for you that you're getting your story out   My best advice is to avoid sharing it with people that will want to actively critique it until you're most of the way through.  Share it with super supportive friends or family, but there's no need for constructive criticism in such a tender, early stage when the story's still trying to find its feet to begin with.  I typically don't let anyone besides my husband read anything earlier than a second draft for the same reason
