Protecting ponies from pets?
« on: August 09, 2014, 02:57:19 AM »
I have two cats that like to chew on things and they are both very curious about my ponies and other collectables. Because of that they can't be in my bedroom (where the ponies are) unsupervised. Do anyone have any tips on how I can protect the ponies and other stuff other than buying glass cabinets?

Place them on higher shelves that the cats can't get to, or knock them down?

Hhm... I wouldn't use any of the anti-chew sprays near ponies. What about if you bought some fine semi-transparent fabric to cover your shelves with?

You could try spraying some scents that cats dont like in proximity to the shelves where the ponies are displayed, although not directly on those ponies or the shelves of course.

I live with cats and 2 chewing dogs, thankfully my dog knows the boundary between "mummy's toys" and "harry's toys". The other dog...does not. The only option I have is to screen off the room to the pony room door. Unfortunately simply preventing them getting to the ponies is really the only option you have unless you invest on some kind of shelf screening - that could be as fancy as adding doors to your shelving units to as basic as saran wrap over the area.

I have mine on top of my entertainment center that's made of wood in a woden book shelf, I have 2 pices of plastic proped up agents the book shelf. If my kitty comes up there the plastic falls and scares him away.

You could line your shelf with bells hanging all around so it jingles if they get near, but your still going to have to keep them out of the room.

Or put a line of tape around your mlps, "kitty shakes his paws to get tape off" hah!

Maybe put very clear plastic contaioners over the mlps? Like take the lid off and turn the contaioner upside down over the mlp.  If they are on like a dresser.

I's say get some on the wall shelves at thrift stores. I find em all the time for $5 and under. Paint em if you like.

Past that glass is really the only way you can keep em close to the ground.. Or not have kitties that isent an option lol! I have my kitty and he means more to me than any pony.

So up high or glass cabnet.

I'd put some strong lavender and mint in the room to keep em from not careing to go in there. We hade lavender dried and put it on our table in a basket and the kitties ran away from it.

Sorry this is all I can think of.
Also you can keep an eye out for a glass case online free cycle, craigs list, facebook yard sales..ect. You never know. You may find ponies this way too.

it's true. and sad. and the dog isn't allowed near my collection and i have them higher than she can reach because as history has shown, she WILL eat them.
she's 11 months old and has more than enough toys but doesn't get enough human interaction during the day so she chews on "mom's" little plastic horses she spends more time with than the dog...
she also ate a magnet that i'm pretty upset about right now, too though. i also disowned her as well recently so...hmmm. the cat isn't eating the ponies, just herself.

but i digress. keep far away and keep covered. either closed shelves or gates or something to prevent the cats from getting to them at all.

Well, my red heeler recently went in my room, got in my bed and chewed the eyes off of a crotchet I had. She also chewed up an animal friend, and one the spare tails I planned on using. So, she's had her bedroom privileges revoked and the bedroom door is almost always closed if she isn't in her crate.

I just keep the door to the display room closed when I'm not in there. The other day I accidentally left it open, and returned to find Kittyzilla stomping through the streets of Ponyville.

Luckily all my cat does is knock them down when I'm ignoring her. She pretty much ignores them the rest of the time. I just make sure to keep my dolls (doll jewelry is so tiny) and my tiny stuff out of her reach so I don't end up losing anything.

I'm lucky to have a separate room for the ponies, an the door is always closed. One of our cats loves the taste of ponies and can't be trusted. The others would probably just make an unholy mess of the place. Prior to having the room, it was very high wall shelves for the ponies, but that only works if your cat isn't a jumper.
